How long does it take for 25mg of CBD to kick in?

February 27, 2025 By GISuser

In the last few years, CBD has become one of the most sought-after product categories in the health and wellness space. From veterans and influencers to your favorite celebs and neighbors, everyone is singing praises about its benefits.

Whether you have chronic pain, anxiety, stress, skin problems, or sleep troubles, CBD may cure it all without causing any side effects or dependency problems. There’s enough data, both scientific and anecdotal, to show that CBD is effective not only for humans but also for pets like cats and dogs.

Most people recommend that 25mg CBD gummies are a good option if you are a beginner. But how long does this 25mg dose take to work? Well, that’s exactly what we will try to find out in this article.

How long does it take for 25mg of CBD to kick in?

Let’s Understand CBD Absorption

Before we try to pinpoint the exact onset time for a specific dosage amount, it’s important to know how CBD is absorbed and processed by your body. Bioavailability is the most important factor here. It simply means the time it will take CBD to mix in your bloodstream and start working.

There are many forms of CBD, like oils, gummies, tinctures, topicals, and vapes, and each form has a different absorption rate. So, the form of 25mg CBD you are taking will determine how long it will take to kick in.

Other than this, your body weight, tolerance levels, metabolism, and whether you are taking CBD on an empty stomach or after eating something also affect the overall onset time.

Fun Fact: a recent study found that having CBD with fatty foods leads to better absorption of cannabinoids in the body and 14 times higher concentration in the bloodstream than usual.

On-set time for 25 mg of CBD

The time it takes for 25mg of CBD to kick in varies depending on the method of consumption. Let’s explore them in detail:

Oral Ingestion (Gummies, Capsules, Softgels, or Adfing CBD Oil in Food or Beverages)

If you take 25mg CBD orally, it will start kicking in within 40 minutes to 2 hours. Only people with faster metabolism will experience effects under one hour, whereas for most people, it takes around an hour or two.

The onset time, in this case, is high because CBD first goes through our digestive process. After ingesting, it breaks down in the stomach and is then processed by the liver before entering the bloodstream.

Eating a meal before taking CBD can further slow down absorption, as the digestive system is already busy breaking down food and other food items. So if your goal is to improve sleep quality, then it’s best to take your gummies at least 2 hours before you hit the bed.

Sublingual Administration ( Putting Drops of CBD Oils and Tinctures Under your Tongue )

If you consume 25mg equivalent of CBD oil sublingually, the effects will start kicking in within 15-30 minutes of consumption. It’s one of the most preferred and widely used methods of consumption, especially if you find yourself locked in anxious and stressful situations out of nowhere.

This faster onset time is because CBD is absorbed directly into the bloodstream through the mucous membranes under the tongue. For a better effect, it’s suggested that you hold the CBD oil under your tongue for 30-60 seconds before swallowing so that it’s fully absorbed.

Make sure to use the dropper provided by the brand for measuring the amount of oil properly, as taking too much or too little may yield a less desirable outcome. You may feel a slight cotton mouth, but please avoid water for a minute at least.

Topical Application (Rubbing CBD-infused creams, ointment, salves, or gels on irritated skin or swollen joints )

Topical Application of CBD products can help you experience localized healing effects. Let’s say you have sore muscles, red, itchy skin, or swollen joints, for this, you can’t rely on gummies or oils.

You’ll have to rub CBD-rich creams or gels on the affected area, and usually, it takes around 60 minutes to feel the relief. The exact time will vary depending on your skin hydration and other ingredients present in the product.

CBD has strong anti-oxidant properties, and regularly using it for hydration may protect your skin from sudden acne breakouts and damage caused by environmental pollution and harmful UV rays.

Inhalation (Consuming CBD-rich vapors or smoke through Vapes and Flowers)

This is perhaps the fastest way to experience CBD’s healing and therapeutic effects. If you use a CBD vape or smoke a 25mg  CBD fower, you’ll feel a wave of calmness taking over you within the first few minutes.

It’s like a jolt and works quickly because this method allows CBD to enter the bloodstream directly through the lungs, bypassing the digestive system. However, it’s not the safest method because, in long-term use, it can cause irritation in the respiratory system and may even cause permanent damage.

So don’t make it a regular habit, and try to stick with regular products like gummies, oils, salves, beverages, brownies, and more.

Is it safe to consume 25mg of CBD every day?

Yes, you can safely consume 25mg CBD every day. It’s a good starting point if you want anxiety, pain, and stress relief, along with better sleep hygiene. Just keep a journal, note down the changes, and only increase if your body develops tolerance over time.

Also, initially, you may feel slight dehydration, fatigue, or headache, but this is normal. Within a week, your body will adjust to the compound. However, if these side effects persist even after a week, then you should drop the dosage to 10mg and maybe discuss it with your doctor first before continuing further.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also avoid CBD completely, as there is not enough research yet to confirm if it’s safe for developing children.

Our Final Thoughts

To sum it up, 25mg CBD may take a few minutes to an hour or two before kicking in, depending on your method of consumption. Oral ingestion and topical application are slower compared to inhalation and sublingual administration.

So try different methods, product variations, and routines till you find the perfect dosage for yourself. For a beginner, 25mg is simply more than enough. Whether you opt for CBD oil, gummies, capsules, or vape, make sure to buy them only from reputed and well-tested brands like Colorado Botanicals.
