A Guide for Designing and Printing Custom Cigarette Boxes

February 25, 2025 By GISuser

Picture background
Custom cigarette packaging is a powerful and effective way to differentiate your products from competitors. Customized boxes are tailored to your brand’s preferences and let you provide a unique packaging experience to your buyers that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. To achieve this, you must carefully design your custom cigarette boxes.

In this article, we will discuss the different factors that will help you design high-end custom printed cigarette boxes that will elevate your brand’s products in the market. Such boxes not only distinguish your goods but also promote brand loyalty and encourage repeat buying.

Let’s get down to real business and explore the ins and outs of designing highly impactful cigarette boxes.

What are Custom Cigarette Boxes?

Cigarette boxes are the cases used to hold cigarette sticks. The basic purpose of using these boxes is to present your products in style and also protect them from external factors such as air, moisture, and dust.

5 Factors to Consider While Designing Cigarette Boxes

  1. Artwork

The artwork refers to the outer print of the boxes. This is not as simple as it appears. You have to evaluate a lot of things if you want to create highly remarkable custom boxes for cigarettes. We know that custom boxes play a critical role in connecting your brand to its buyers. It also helps increase sales and establish a solid brand reputation in the market. There is no denying the fact that customers judge the quality of cigarettes through their packaging.

When it comes to creating an outer print design for cigarette boxes, you need to identify your target market. If you are selling flavored cigarettes, your buyers will have different preferences than the ones looking for typical tobacco cigarettes. Similarly, the design elements on custom vape boxes will be different compared to cigar boxes.

Other than the fonts, images, and graphics, the FDA’s requirements must be added in the outer print. The FDA mandates all cigarette brands to print health warnings on at least 50% of the front and rear panels of the cigarette packaging.

  1. Material

The next big thing to consider is the material of the cigarette box. Most cigarette boxes are made from cardboard or Kraft. These materials are famous due to their flexibility, cost-effectiveness and eco-friendly nature. Both of them can be tailored in any shape and size, allowing you to get unique boxes as per the size and number of the cigarette sticks inside the box.

  1. Box Style

One significant benefit of using custom boxes for your brand’s cigarettes is the freedom to select the style. Custom cigarette boxes are usually categorized into four different styles. Let’s explore them to help you select the best one for your brand.

  • Hinge-Lid: This one is the most famous style not only in the US but all over the world as well. As the name implies, the box comes with a hinged lid that opens from the top and provides easy access to consumers and also protects the cigarettes inside.

  • Soft Pack: This is also a famous box style and best for on-the-go smokers. A soft box is also known as a crush pack. The pack has an opening on one side from which buyers can access the cigarettes. Soft packs are typically made from thin paper. The best part about these boxes is that they are cost-effective, but they don’t offer enough protection.

  • Tuck-End Box: It is a very uncommon style for cigarette packaging, but some brands still use them. It gives a retro look and serves as a unique selling point for vintage lovers. The box has flaps that tuck into the sides. Just like the other, tuck boxes can be easily customized for branding purposes.

  • Slide-Top Box: It features a sliding lid that opens horizontally to reveal the cigarettes inside. This style is also less common in the market but provides a unique unboxing experience.

  • Cartons: These are different from the conventional cigarette boxes. It is large in size and contains 10 or 20 packs. Most brands use them to ship cigarettes inside a large box typically made of corrugated material.

  1. Embellishments

There are many different ways to add more appeal and vibrancy to custom cigarette boxes. The most common is applying finishes and different coatings on the box.

In cigarette packaging, embossing and debossing are the most popular. Embossing raises some parts of the box and adds a tactile feel to the box. Debossing, on the other hand, indents the selected design elements. Most brands use these techniques on design elements like logos, brand names, or product variants.

If you are selling high-end cigarettes, you can go with gold or silver foiling. It adds a luxurious touch to the box and increases its appeal. You can also select a glossy or matte finish. These finishes not only beautify the boxes but also make them more durable against external elements.

  1. Colors and Printing Techniques

You will see cigarette boxes in almost every color. The color you use on the box is a reflection of your brand and what your cigarettes stand for. Therefore, pick the right colors and don’t forget to check a sample of the box before you place the order.

The two commonly used coloring systems include CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and key/black) and PMS (Pantone Matching System). CMYK gives a bold and vibrant look while PMS ensures accuracy in boxes printed in different batches. For cigarette boxes, PMS is a better option, as it gives buyers the guarantee of consistency in products and their packaging.

Packaging suppliers usually use offset printing for cigarette boxes as they are typically printed in bulk orders. This also enables brands to buy custom cigarette boxes at wholesale rates, ensuring maximum savings.

Final Words

Custom packaging boxes can make a huge impact on your business outlook. They not only increase sales but also help in establishing your brand in the market. A large number of tobacco brands have changed their fate by using custom cigarette boxes. It is time you do the same.
