According to a census, there were around 76.4 million baby boomers in the US a few years ago. Now, there can be many reasons why 19.6% of Pennsylvania’s population is comprised of seniors aged 65 and above. This can be due to the lower retirement cost and multiple housing options for seniors.

Regardless of the reasons for the increase in the senior population, the availability of quality healthcare for seniors is a big issue. It is normal to develop health issues as you age; however, seniors are unable to get quality healthcare due to the rising healthcare costs and shortage of services. But, seniors can reduce their chances of falling sick and developing other issues by following a healthier lifestyle.

Tips for Seniors to Stay Healthy

Although some health issues, like genetic illnesses, are inevitable as you age, you can still reduce your chances of developing other preventable diseases by adopting a healthier lifestyle. So, here are some tips that can help you stay healthy and happy as you age.

  • Don’t skip your doctor’s appointments

Seniors are at risk of developing many diseases. However, with the help of regular checkups and tests, these illnesses can be identified and treated before the situation worsens.

For instance, Pennsylvania ranks third in the US for mesothelioma-related deaths. Mesothelioma is caused due to asbestos exposure and is found mostly in seniors, as it can take decades to develop. So, it is necessary to get regular checkups and tests done to identify illnesses before they get worse.

A helpful thing is that people suffering from mesothelioma may be eligible for compensation. So, if you get diagnosed, you can search for a Pennsylvania mesothelioma lawyer to help you get compensated for medical and other expenses related to your treatment.

  • Get a good night’s sleep

Getting enough sleep is necessary for everyone, irrespective of their age. A good night’s sleep can help improve your memory and concentration, boost your mood, and enhance your overall well-being.

As you get older, you might notice your sleep schedule changing. You might start going to sleep early and waking up early as well. But, no matter what your sleeping schedule is, it is necessary to get at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep daily. However, if you have trouble sleeping most of the time, it is important to visit your doctor right away.

  • Take your medication regularly

As you know, experiencing some health issues is normal as you age. Your doctor may prescribe medications to help manage issues and reduce painful symptoms. So, it is necessary to take your medications regularly to help keep such problems at bay. Apart from that, it is necessary to talk to your doctor whenever you experience any new symptoms and avoid self-medication because it can harm you.

  • Maintain a healthy diet

It is normal for your digestive system to slow down as you age. So, eating a balanced diet is essential for maintaining your health. You can improve your diet by adding high-fiber food items along with fruits and vegetables to your diet. Fiber can help keep your digestive system healthy. It can also reduce your chances of experiencing certain issues, such as constipation. Apart from that, you can also take vitamin supplements recommended by your doctor to fulfill any deficiencies.

Additionally, it is necessary to stay hydrated to help reduce the chances of developing problems such as urinary tract infections. Keep a water bottle with you or set reminders to help you remember to drink enough water.

  • Exercise regularly

Although exercise is important at all stages, it is especially important for seniors. This is because exercise can help avoid chronic health problems. In addition, certain exercises can also help manage chronic pain.

Apart from physical benefits, exercise can also help improve your mental health. Physical activity releases the feel-good hormones known as endorphins. This helps in elevating your mood, reducing stress, and may also improve symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Seniors are recommended to get at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. You can choose any physical activity you enjoy, like:

  • Walking.
  • Aerobics.
  • Yoga.
  • Swimming.
  • Socialize

Loneliness is a common issue faced by seniors, and it can cause significant mental health problems too. Research suggests that loneliness can lead to depression in older adults. And it also increases your chances of developing dementia or other health issues by 50%.

So, seniors need to socialize as much as possible. You can dedicate your weekends to visiting your family or ask them to come visit you. On the other hand, you can also meet your friends or try reconnecting with old friends. You can also meet people with similar interests and improve your social life by signing up for social events like book clubs or move nights.

  • Exercise your brain

Exercising your brain is just as important as physical activity. As you age, your risk of developing certain diseases increases. But keeping your mind sharp and engaging in mentally stimulating tasks can help decrease these chances. Engaging in mentally challenging activities can improve your memory, cognitive health, and overall functioning too.

You can do many things to keep your mind sharp and active, like:

  • Learn about new topics.
  • Read books.
  • Try new hobbies.
  • Try learning a new language.
  • Complete puzzles.

Concluding Thoughts

Aging is inevitable and a normal part of life. And it also brings along different issues with it, like physical illnesses and poor mental health. But it doesn’t have to be this way. There are many things you can do which can make old age healthier and more fun. By adopting a healthy lifestyle, you can prevent many chronic illnesses and delay the onset of age-related diseases as well. In addition, prioritizing your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health as you age.
