Whether you are road running or taking to adventurous trails, every woman needs comfortable running shorts. Shopping for running shorts can be overwhelming. With so many brands and styles to choose from, it’s hard to know where even to begin. From basic lightweight shorts to specialised, high-tech gear, the options are seemingly endless. So, where do you start when selecting the best running shorts for you? Don’t worry, here are some pointers you can use as a guide.

Let’s take a look at some top tips for finding running shorts women will love!

5 Tips for selecting the best running shorts for women

Select the right material

Running shorts should be three things: comfortable, lightweight and quick to dry!

With this in mind, you need to select shorts that are made from synthetic fabric such as polyester, and shorts that have the right amount of stretch. For intensive running, try to avoid selecting cotton clothing as this kind of fabric retains moisture from perspiration and can make your run incredibly uncomfortable and limiting. No one wants to run in heavy shorts that are too constricting!

Choose the right length

Selecting the right running short length is a personal choice. Some women prefer running shorts that are fairly long as they offer great protection and muscular support, especially when running longer distances. However, some women may prefer the minimalism of shorter shorts for the same distance. Therefore, choosing the right length for your running shorts needs to be determined on your idea of support and the kind of running experience you prefer.

But if we were to provide greater insight, it’s best to take a look at the kind of running you are taking on when selecting your short length.

If you are a roadrunner or short trail runner who is going to face hotter weather while out running, then lightweight shorts provide greater freedom of movement and women usually feel better in lightweight, short shorts on these kinds of runs.

If you are a longer distance runner or ultra-trail runner, then longer shorts may offer greater protection against the elements and can protect you when the temperature begins to drop.

For any runner who is facing cooler or winter weather, we suggest that you place tights under your shorts or a pair of overpants can be worn over them – layering is key if the weather may change or if your body temperature changes.

Understanding the liner

There are two main types of running short liners and these are:

  • Shorts with integrated underwear
  • Compression shorts

Running shorts that come with integrated underwear are the most common type. These kinds of shorts, such as athletic shorts, provide support with briefs, boxers or tights – depending on the make. They also offer a great level of comfort as they provide excellent friction management – especially between the thighs.

However, compression shorts offer even greater friction management for your thighs. These shorts also offer increased blood circulation while you are on your run. Shorts with integrated underwear will also give you the freedom to wear compression shorts underneath them – so you are able to combine the two if you want to layer.

Try them on and see which works best for you and your running style.

Knowing the waistband

Another thing to check when choosing your runging shorts is a  your is the waistband. Most shorts have an elastic waistband that comes with an integrated drawstring for better fit. High-end shorts usually come with wider waistbands and better stretch or ergonomic fabrics specifically cut for women. They sometimes also include storage pockets – and these waist belts offer better comfort during your runs while lessening friction. These waist belts as opposed to bands will feature on many trail running ranges or performance running ranges.

Make sure that the waistband fits you and is comfortable – there is nothing more frustrating than an uncomfortable or loose waistband while running.

Understand your pockets

Who doesn’t love pockets? But pockets are different when it comes to running shorts. You see, hand pockets in running shorts can be problematic as they can bounce around while you run. With this in mind, look for shorts that have integrated pockets in the waistband. This means you will be able to comfortably carry a small flask of water, an energy bar, gel or even your kets, while you run. Today, many brands also come with a phone pocket – but make sure the shorts are made from good quality and quick-drying material because you don’t want moisture to harm your phone or other electronics.

Some short linings also come with small pockets that can be located in the back or front – so look out for them!

Now that you have some insight into finding running shorts women will love, it’s time to take to the road or trail in comfort and style!
