How Gambling Differs Across the World

March 3, 2023 By GISuser

The gambling industry across the world is varied and complex as well. Different regions and countries perceive gambling differently, and this is due to different laws and regulations that apply to gambling in those countries.

While gambling is regarded as positive in some countries, it is strictly illegal in others, such as the United Arab Emirates and Cambodia. It doesn’t matter whether it is accepted; gambling forms a part of many cultures worldwide. According to world gambling statistics, 26% of the world’s population gambles. This translates to around 1.6 billion people who gamble.

Gambling in Different Countries/Regions

North America

North America comprises three countries, the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico. These countries have different rules and regulations concerning gambling. In the US, federal laws control gambling, while the states and locals also have laws on gambling. The native Americans, through the Indian Gaming Regulation Act 1988, regulate gambling on their lands. Federal laws also define the boundaries of gambling.

In Canada, gambling of any kind is deemed illegal, with some exceptions. Section 201-207 of the Criminal Code of Canada outlines the laws regarding betting and gambling. Section 204 of the same law allows for particular exemptions like gambling on lawful sports games like races. The lottery is legal if the government regulates it. Also, each state has their separate laws.

Mexico has gaming regulations that regulate and control gambling. These bodies govern all the games except the National Lottery. The National Lottery has its own regulation.

European Union (EU)

The EU works as one state in certain matters like transportation and trade. Conversely, they do not have specific regulations when it comes to gambling. This means that each member of the EU has its own rules concerning gambling. The only provision is that these countries must follow the provision in the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU).

Some EU countries impose gambling restrictions and only allow poker, while others regulate online gaming. Germany does not have a structural consensus on several factors, and there are concerns about the state of gambling, which is a monopoly. The French gaming regulations have different laws for different games like horse racing, online gaming, and sports betting.

In Italy, the gambling laws are liberal, unlike most countries in the EU. Gambling in Poland is regulated by the Gambling Act, allowing for a state monopoly on several games, cash lotteries, and online casinos.

Australia

Australia is a massive gambling nation, so the central bank increased the interest rates. Betting on sports online and other games like slot machines is legal. The Aussies love slot machines more than any other game. New South Wales state has almost half of the total poker machines.

Singapore

Despite opening its first casino in 2010, Singapore established itself as one of the largest gambling countries in the world. Due to addiction and losses feared by many, the government of Singapore is discouraging the locals from gambling by charging an $81 entry fee. Families can ban their members from going to casinos through the “Family Exclusion Order.” Nevertheless, all these efforts have had no impact on reducing the gambling spirit in the country.

China

China is a big gambling nation, and people love gambling, especially during the Chinese New Year. Gambling is a good thing, and it is accepted. However, there are limits. The most popular game is a card game, as most know how to play it.
