What is coliving. Explained in simple words

Coliving is a type of low-cost housing where people who are close in spirit live together.

Have you ever rented a room with roommates? Co-living is a modern version of communal housing that appeals to the younger generation:

  • low cost (real estate prices are rising, and not everyone can afford to buy a home or rent a separate apartment);
  • mobility (you can easily change your place of residence without acquiring unnecessary things);
  • the opportunity to find like-minded people and friends (coliving is often home to start-ups, programmers, entrepreneurs, students).

Colvings resemble hostels – there are separate rooms for privacy and common public spaces (kitchen, recreation area, workspaces). Many coliving tenants are set up for long-term rentals.

History

Colvings originated in the United States. As one of the first examples of coliving, Rainbow Mansion is talked about – four young scientists rented a house in Silicon Valley, and it soon became the center of attraction for social and intellectual life.

It soon became a business: in 2014, young entrepreneur Tom Carrier founded Campus and began renting houses in San Francisco and selling “membership cards” to live in them. Most of his clients were programmers and start-ups, so that coliving became not just a cheap option for living in a city experiencing overcrowding, but a way of life, now coliving nyc is very popular. Since real estate is very expensive in a huge metropolis like New York.

Criticism

Coliving has many opponents: some compare them to discredited hippie communes, some believe that they will just soon go out of fashion.

The pros of coliving

In coliving, young people get excellent living conditions and also make friends and like-minded people, which is especially valuable in the digital age. At the same time, you can always get some privacy and be alone with yourself. On Outpost.com you will find up-to-date information on rental housing, the site has a lot of options for different requirements.

Another big plus is that coliving gives you the opportunity to be mobile in terms of work. Instead of spending a huge amount of time on daily trips, a young person today chooses a colving closer to work, and the problem is solved. What about coliving that brings together people engaged in a single project? They can live and work “without leaving the box office,” which allows them to develop their startup without losing a minute – this is very important at the startup stage. It is also convenient for those who work remotely – any colibus implies convenient work areas.
