WYSIWYG editors vs SEO – how do they influence it?

October 2, 2021 By GISuser

Using the WYSIWYG editors has many advantages. However, some fear that it may have a negative influence on a website’s search engine optimization. How to optimize web pages while using the WYSIWYG HTML editor, and what to pay attention to when choosing it?

With modern web tools, it’s necessary to know HTML anymore to polish the content before publishing. You can do it without any programming skills by using WYSIWYG editors.

These editors are an integral part of content management systems – you can find them, for example, in WordPress or Drupal. However, when developing your custom CMS or using the headless one, you may need to integrate an external WYSIWYG editor. You can choose an open source WYSIWYG editor or invest in a subscribed SaaS solution that is completely customizable and doesn’t come with any limits on users.

WYSIWYG HTML editor – what are its advantages?

The acronym WYSIWYG stands for what you see is what you get – a motto that has introduced new quality to content management. Before the WYSIWYG editors became common, the basic knowledge of HTML was compulsory in order to edit the website. But since they enable rich text translation into HTML, the content managers can now introduce changes, being able to see how they look in real-time. That can make their work much easier, faster, and more efficient.

WYSIWYG rich text editor can make collaboration easier if only it has all the features that facilitate content teamwork, such as:

  • suggestion and comment mode
  • user panel and user presence list
  • real-time caret position and highlighting the text
  • track changes

The good editors with expressive API enable you to create responsive images and use files published in external repositories and add your own extensions thanks to a modular architecture. Markdown support is also essential.

How to make search engine optimization easier with WYSIWYG?

Aside from rich text editing capabilities, the WYSIWYG HTML editor should also enable you to optimize the content for the search engine. When working directly with HTML code, it’s easier to optimize the structure of the website or web applications and use different kinds of tags (like, for example, open graph tags and alt tags).

It doesn’t mean, however, that it’s not possible to optimize the content with WYSIWYG editor. Due to existing plug-ins, it can be even faster and more efficient. The SEO plug-ins, available for the CMSs, suggest the recommended density of keywords, number of particular headlines, length of the paragraphs, meta description, and tags, combining SEO with UX, which is significant for Google’s engines.

A WYSIWYG HTML editor can be integrated with your CMS and other external tools, also for search engine optimization. All the operations which are important SEO-wise, can be performed within it.
