Things You Need to Learn to Excel in the Supply Chain

June 9, 2021 By Editor

Almost every industry suffered from recession during the pinnacle of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite major industries taking a blow initially, few corporations are steadily recovering from an economic standstill, and the SCM (supply chain management) industry isn’t an exception!

Until a few months ago, many people assumed that SCM would exceed $41 billion by 2026 and continue being the backbone of international finances. Simultaneously, outsourcing has become a game-changer in this industry, transforming different aspects of supply chain management.

Ten must-have skills for supply chain leaders

The supply chain management industry offers several lucrative opportunities to students seeking career-building opportunities in logistics. Graduates can expect more jobs to appear in this field as SCM keeps expanding in the post-COVID-19 era. But becoming a supply chain manager isn’t possible without having the right skills for the job. So, what sort of skills will you need to excel in supply chain management? For prospective students, we’ve compiled a brief list here:

  • 1. Communication skills:-

If you wish to work with senior executives in SCM, it’s imperative to learn their language. Become an effective communicator to excel in the field of supply chain management. You can’t bring excellence into communication without knowing the lingo – the logistics jargon people in this business communicate. A supply chain manager must explain complex industry issues to board members – who won’t necessarily be familiar with these topics – to achieve success in the field.

  • 2. Global business leadership:-

Logisticians need leadership skills to acquire excellence in SCM since supper chain operations have gone global. You can’t work in the international business environment without effective leadership skills. Fortunately, many reputable institutes offer digital courses for students contemplating joining the SCM industry. You can obtain a masters degree in logistics and supply chain management online to manage your business in the global market. So, hone your academic expertise as well.

  • 3. Writing skills:-

A supply chain manager’s responsibilities include communicating with clients/customers online. So, they must hone their email-writing capabilities. You’ll probably write dozens of emails to different people every day. It’s essential to convey your message comprehensibly to the recipient. Also, you will produce business reports and proposals that require advanced writing fluency. That’s why you should focus on improving your writing abilities and turn yourself into an excellent messenger.

  • 4. People skills:-

Managers – no matter which industry they belong to – must possess public-dealing skills. You’ll also interact with people in the supply chain management industry. So, if you’re not a people person, it’s time to learn how to become one! Listen to what customers have to say, acknowledge their concerns, and respond to any complaints they have effectively. It will ensure successful career-building for you in SCM.

  • 5. Networking skills:-

No business survives without connections and associations. Managers require networking skills to attract more customers and retaining the current ones. As a logistician, you must find a mentor in this field to help develop your supply chain expertise. Try communicating with your suppliers and create a lasting relationship with them. Make it a habit to ask questions and keep increasing your knowledge.

  • 6. Being customer-focused:-

Are you customer-focused? Since this quality makes one a successful logistician. Make customers a priority and develop your understanding of the supply chain management industry from the client’s perspective. Create slogans that resonate with people’s expectations of your business and make the marketing campaign memorable for the target audience. So, being customer-focused, you can drive more engagement and become a highly accomplished supply chain manager.

  • 7. Digital supply chain:-

All industries today are moving towards digital transformation. So, supply chain managers must also incorporate digital elements into their practices. Experts have called them the 8 C’s of digital supply chain management, allowing logisticians to make this industry more productive. It’ll optimize inventory allocation while accelerating business operations via automation. Similarly, SCM will adopt digital marketing, so managers must enhance their know-how about these technologies.

  • 8. Technical know-how:-

As a manager, you don’t have to be a know-it-all when it comes to technology. But it would help if you had a fundamental understanding of technical matters within the industry. Remember to bring more IT specialists to your team. It would be best to collaborate with the CIO to combat challenges with technological applications and their implementation. So, technical knowledge is a must-have for logisticians. You should also be able to handle some well-known supply chain software solutions.

  • 9. Project management skills:-

A supply chain manager must possess problem-solving, risk management, and personal organization skills. These crucial capabilities enable logisticians to keep track of different projects and assess the profitability of these ventures. These skills also help you make informed decisions about approving a particular project or not. Moreover, you must be able to discuss budgets, negotiate for resources, and schedule project deadlines. So, get yourself familiar with project management.

  • 10. Negotiation tactics:-

As a logistician, you’ll interact with your colleagues and also communicate with people outside your organization. These internal and external interactions require negotiation tactics. So, it’s essential to start polishing your expertise in negotiation. A supply chain manager often needs to negotiate for streamlining business operations. From brokering vendor agreements to dealing acquisitions, you’ll get involved in different scenarios involving negotiations and reconciliations.

Conclusion

We can see that supply chain management constitutes a necessary component of almost every business. LinkedIn surveyed in 2019, asking about the most effective skills for young logisticians in SCM. So, over 94% of respondents described analytical skills as a supply chain manager’s chief asset! Then come public-dealing abilities and communication skills; teamwork and financial know-how made it to the list as well. But the most remarkable skill had a degree in supply chain management, a vital qualification for successful logisticians.
