Launch of New GIS Strategic Planning Course on Bootcamp GIS

April 12, 2021 By Editor

A course for GIS Architects and Managers

Almost every organization has a GIS.  And all large organizations develop strategic plans.  This class is needed to help GIS Architects and GIS Managers have the appropriate voice to describe how their GIS will provide essential service in a strategic plan.  In order to tackle this event, you can seek the guidance and shortcuts found in this new course ‘Define a GIS Framework that Supports your Strategic Plan.’   The course shows GIS professionals how to define your GIS products, communicate to stakeholders, and create a services  roadmap. This course is listed on the new GIS education platform, Bootcamp GIS.  A growing library of courses are being taught by Subject Matter Experts that demonstrate their real projects through online short courses.  The platform gives students the flexibility to pick a single course, build a certificate, start classes when they want, and choose tiers of instructor interaction.  See How it Works.

The need for IT and GIS to be on the same page

Some GIS managers migrated into their jobs with a lack of IT background.  To make up for this, it’s important to learn the language of IT and teach the language of GIS so that they function symbiotically.   Nathan Heazlewood, the course author, wanted to help people bridge this gap using his 25 years experience as a GIS strategist.  Heazlewood said, ‘It’s a funny thing that to get to my position, I got a PhD from the ‘College of Hard Lessons’.  There’s no adequate course to train GIS and IT managers on how to be a forward thinking strategist.   Many of us analysts wind up here but then have to act on instinct.  After thinking about this need for a long time, I wanted to go beyond my Powerpoints and truly demonstrate how to proactively develop your GIS strategic plans.’  Everybody loves templates and this course has a process template in each of the course lessons.

Planning through tried and true structures

Most managers were promoted through technical expertise in GIS and years of service.  But they may not have had management training to think about a blend of IT/GIS architecture and management processes.  Heazlewood offered this encouragement, ‘I hope you dig in and use these strategies.  These are credible approaches that will allow you to demonstrate technical thought leadership rather than just GIS or soft skills.  Let’s get more of us sitting at the executive table along with the rest of the leadership!’  A Strategic Plan is serious business as it usually determines your organization’s direction for 3-5 years.  So it may be worth the investment to gain the templates provided in this class.
