USIBD Members and Building Documentation’s Critical Role in the Rebuilding of Notre Dame

April 22, 2019 By Editor

Tustin, California – April 22, 2018 – Members of the U.S. Institute of Building Documentation (USIBD) have been lending their perspective about the role of Building Documentation in the rebuilding of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris from the recent devastating fire.

USIBD president John M. Russo, AIA was interviewed yesterday for an article in Engineering News-Record (ENR) about the critical role Building Documentation will play in shortening the reconstruction time frame and answering questions about the existing conditions. The 3D scan data was gathered of the Cathedral by a team in 2015, headed up by the late art history professor Andrew Tallon of Vassar College in 2015, including precise measurements, colors, even slight deviations in the structure, for engineering purposes. Read the full article here.
Member Dan Edelson of STEREO was interviewed by CNN Style, and discussed the accuracy that restorers will be able to use from Tallon’s scans as well, noting that the data is a “very accurate representation to the level that until a few years nobody could do.” Read the full article here.
USIBD’s many working committees develop documents, surveys, reports, amongst the resources it provides for the Building Documentation Community. For anyone with a passion for historic preservation there is a place for you on the USIBD’s Heritage Subcommittee. Contact Membership Director Jill Rosoff to get involved.
