How Technology Has Changed the Cars we Drive

Just like every other industry in the world, the automotive industry is continuing to change and evolve at a rapid rate. After all, thirty years ago people were driving without seatbelts in their cars.

But, like all the other industries out there, the world of motor vehicles has been changed because of one major reason – the advancement of technology. That’s right, technology has seen us go from cars we wouldn’t have given a second look years ago, to ones we could never have dreamt of. Let’s not forget that the world is still changing, with constant chatter of driverless cars, which could end up on UK roads by 2021.

Autopilot

While not a fully-autonomous car, this was introduced by Tesla back in 2015. While many people were weary of it, others misunderstood what it could actually do, resulting in a number of videos online showing cars crashing. However, it has changed the way vehicles can operate as you drive, as the main purpose of the Autopilot was to manage the speed and distance from the car ahead of you, once in your current lane.

Rear View

Introduced in 2002, this is now available in most new cars, helping you to see what’s behind you via a screen on the dashboard of the car. Even when there isn’t a screen, cars now have technology that can inform a driver if they are too close to a vehicle, wall or curb while reversing or parking, meaning it’s not all down to your eyes and luck now.

Wireless Technology

From providing hands-free communication services to allowing you to play your own music, no one at first understood the need of wireless tech like Bluetooth in a car. However, in today’s day and age, it’s become an almost prerequisite of any vehicle, with cars now coming with 4G hotspots and Wi-Fi capabilities.

GPS

While starting as the simple Sat Nav, these are now built into most cars. This has completely changed the way we drive, as we no longer have to rely on previous driving experience, maps or a navigator and road signs. Instead, we can programme in a destination and allow the car to tell us where to go. Although there were issues when this first came about, the technology is now so advanced, you can understand why people have been dreaming of a fully autonomous car for the last few years.
