Burns & McDonnell Chooses Intergraph® SmartPlant® Fusion for Power Plant Revamp

October 22, 2015 By Editor

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., October 22, 2015 – Burns & McDonnell, ranked in the Top 20 of Engineering News-Record’s 500 leading design firms, has selected Intergraph® SmartPlant® Fusion to manage large volumes of unstructured, unintelligent engineering information.
SmartPlant Fusion is a breakthrough solution for both engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies and plant operators to rapidly find, capture, organize, link and visualize large volumes of information through a simple web portal. This information includes documents, drawings, models, lists and datasheets, which exist in multiple formats and are found scattered – and often duplicated – in various folders and databases.

Such was the case at a coal-fired power plant where Burns & McDonnell was engaged to perform a revamp. The owner required that all documents be cross-referenced with engineering tags to create a tag index. Burns & McDonnell chose SmartPlant Fusion to assist.

“Burns & McDonnell is one of the top engineering design firms serving the electrical power industry. Our customers expect innovative approaches to complicated situations,” said Rick Halil, General Manager of the Burns & McDonnell Energy Division. “Intergraph SmartPlant Fusion helped fulfill the owner’s requirements on a very tight schedule.

“Mastering this new technology in its early stages also gives Burns & McDonnell opportunities to use SmartPlant Fusion on both greenfield and brownfield projects,” Halil said. “We can help owners with decades-old legacy information quickly organize their data and documents while assisting with facility start-ups, modifications, revamps and shutdown planning. SmartPlant Fusion opens new business opportunities for Burns & McDonnell by bringing solutions to the owners we serve.”

Gerhard Sallinger, Intergraph Process, Power & Marine president, said, “Burns & McDonnell’s use of SmartPlant Fusion is a perfect example of our innovative customers applying Intergraph technology to solve problems. SmartPlant Fusion provides interoperability with Intergraph’s SmartPlant Enterprise for Owner Operators (SPO), which means owners can take what contractors like Burns & McDonnell does and promote those to a fully managed environment.”

SmartPlant Fusion is designed to rapidly capture, organize and make large volumes of existing unstructured information available through a simple web portal interface in a highly organized and intuitive manner. The types of unstructured information include documents, drawings, images, 3D models and even high-definition surveying, which comprises integrated laser scan point clouds and high-resolution photography. SmartPlant Fusion is the fastest and smartest way to make information available for decision support. It enables intuitive navigation with a photo-realistic representation of the way things are really connected, making unintelligent information smart.
