Timmons Group Develops Forest Inventory and Timber Sale Solution for Missouri

August 4, 2015 By GISuser

Richmond, VA – August 4, 2015 – Timmons Group, a proven leader in geospatial technology, has partnered with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) to develop web and mobile applications for the collection and reporting of forest inventory and timber sales data.  In order to support the growing and changing needs of the agency, MDC recognized that an enhanced technology platform and new functionality was needed to improve the data collection and analysis experience for MDC foresters, staff and consulting foresters.

Timmons Group kicked off the engagement with a discovery phase to learn the existing MDC business processes and to understand and design opportunities for future automation and efficiency gains.    Timmons Group presented several commercial off-the-shelf solutions, hybrid solutions, and custom solutions.  Based on the results of the discovery, MDC decided that a custom application would best meet their workflows and desired requirements.  Timmons Group worked with MDC to design and develop a custom web application for browser based “in-office” data analysis and reporting and an accompanying Windows 8.1 mobile application designed for field data collection using ruggedized Panasonic ToughPad devices.

Diane Flores, MDC’s IT Business Analyst involved in the project comments, “These new applications will foster better management capabilities and visibility for our office staff and more efficiency for our foresters in the field.  They will allow us to be more productive and improve our capabilities even in remote areas.”

Timmons Group used an agile development approach to iteratively build the applications to integrate with MDC’s enterprise GIS and forestry databases.  The web application allows central MDC staff to manage field data, generate reports and manage timber sale contracts.  The mobile application was designed and developed as a native Windows 8.1 tablet application and is touch-friendly and has the capability to allow foresters to work completely off-line in remote locations.
