GeoConnections Webinar – The Role and Impact of Geospatial Information in the Big Data Arena

October 23, 2014 By GISuser

This from GeoConnections Canada, a webinar titled The Role and Impact of Geospatial Information in the Big Data Arena – Tuesday, October 28, 2014 – 1:30-3:00 PM (Eastern Daylight Time)

GeoConnections, a national initiative led by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), invites you to learn about how geospatial information technologies contribute to the Big Data phenomenon and, inversely, how Big Data technology contributes to geomatics.

Big Data is a term becoming increasingly relevant today with the collection of data sets becoming so large and complex that it becomes difficult to process those using traditional data management and processing applications. Big Data uses new generation of technologies designed to extract valuable information from very large volumes of a wide variety of data, by enabling high-velocity capture and analysis.

Big Data benefits from geospatial solutions in various ways. Big Data largely utilizes the position of objects, thanks to GPS-enabled common devices added to smartphones, cameras and cars. Adding spatial and temporal references also leads to a proliferation of new analytical possibilities and the discovery of new facts, which can contribute significantly to the outcomes of Big Data. The Big Data phenomenon contributes to geomatics in two ways: as a facilitator and as a source of innovation. The Big Data technological ecosystem facilitates the storing and processing of geospatial data and it is leading to new geospatial-specific solutions, new bodies of knowledge and new scientific communities. This GeoConnections webinar will inform on how Big Data and geospatial information are connected and the different opportunities and challenges they create.

You will learn more about:

  • Fundamentals of Big Data;
  • Contribution of geomatics to Big Data;
  • Contribution of Big Data to geomatics;
  • Challenges and opportunities of Big Data in geomatics.
