Gearing up for Another #ESRIUC and 5 GeoGeeky Things for the Developer to do

July 10, 2014 By Editor

The countdown is on… I’m scrambling here to prepare for a busy week at the annual Esri user conference in San Diego. I’m always interested in some of the fun developer meets and events that are planned during UC week – these are always pretty geeky, very interesting, and if lucky there’s usually some beer around as well! And so, the following are just 5 activities of interest that the Geo Developer or wanna-be developer mike consider taking part in while at the UC:

GeoDev Meetup
Get Enlightened by the geekiest of the GeoGeeks at the always popular DevMetup.. oh, there may be beer there too!  Back again! The ever-so-popular GeoDev Meetup is once again happening. Share in the experience of Esri staff and developers around the world who will share projects, code, and ideas at this informal techno-social. Appetizers and beverages are served. Did we mention prizes for trivia? Oh yeah, that too. San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina – Coronado Room – Wednesday, July 16, 2014 6:00 PM

OpenStreetMap Editathon Mappy Hour
Mingle with an incredible community of people who love to map. Learn about OpenStreetMap (OSM), a free global dataset. All mappers are welcome. Bring your laptop, we’ll provide the rest! Tuesday, July 15, 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Marriott Marquis & Marina, Catalina Room

SpeedGeeking – Meet some more GeoGeeks!
What’s the best way to experience 10 high-energy lightning talks? As fast as possible! Rotate from presenter to presenter every few minutes. Topics range from mobile and online apps to design and user interaction tips. Give us an hour and learn 10 new things.
Tuesday, 15 Jul 2014, 3:15pm – 5:00pm. Location: Ballroom 06 Lobby

Lightning Talks
12 slides, 5 minutes, then you get the hook from Andy!
GIS peers share inspiring ideas and insightful solutions—in five minutes. This is your opportunity to tell your GIS story and hear from others. Monday, July 14, 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Ballroom 20 D

Sunday Night at Dicks
This is not an official event, however, Sunday night on the patio of dick’s is always a great place to connect with old friends! If you just got into town and need a pint to wind down and prep for a busy week then Sunday night at Dick’s is always a great go-to, particularly if you have no plans! Drop by after dinner or come early and meet some friends, get abused by the nice Dick’s wait staff… if you hang around long enough you’ll definitely meet up with some old friends and likely make a couple of new ones as well!

I’m looking forward to the Monday plenary and hearing from Jack and his team about the future of ArcGIS and ArcGIS Online followed up by a keynote presentation from members of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, should be awesome! The “What’s New” sessions are always my favorites and I’ll be sure to take in the EDN lightning talks as well as plenty of hands-on demos on the show floor from all the developers and business partners that are building on the ArcGIS platform. Like most events, I’ll be sharing updates via Twitter @GISuser and @gletham (thinking I’ll also try and tag my posts with #GLesriuc as well as #esriuc) , dropping some photos on Pinterest in a dedicated ESRIUC board as well as periodic updates on the AnyGeo Blog area of GISuser. Have a great week all and be sure to say hi if you see me run past you at the conference (or maybe pose with me in a Selfie!), or if you aren’t there but are wondering about something please feel free to drop me a tweet!
