Global Mapper LiDAR Module Released with Powerful LiDAR Transformation Option

June 5, 2014 By Editor

Hallowell, Maine – June 4, 2014 – Blue Marble Geographics (bluemarblegeo.com) is pleased to announce the release of the LiDAR Module for Global Mapper version 15.2. This interim release features added support for the transformation (shift/rotate/scale) of LiDAR point clouds and the option to filter selected LiDAR points to a specified elevation and/or color range. Blue Marble’s geospatial data manipulation, visualization and conversion solutions are used worldwide by thousands of GIS analysts at software, oil and gas, mining, civil engineering, surveying, and technology companies, as well as governmental and university organizations.

The LiDAR Module is an optional add-on for Global Mapper, an affordable and easy-to-use GIS application that offers access to an unparalleled variety of spatial datasets. The LiDAR Module is included with the installation of Global Mapper v15 (or higher) but is activated with a separate license key. With the LiDAR Module, Global Mapper users can quickly view and process LiDAR point clouds containing a billion points or more. The LiDAR Module offers an array of post-processing tools that enable the querying, filtering, editing, reclassifying, and exporting of LiDAR data.

This release includes a variety of updates to the LiDAR Module as well as to the core functionality of Global Mapper. The LiDAR Module features added support for the transformation (shift/rotate/scale) of LiDAR point clouds and the option to filter LiDAR data by elevation range or color. Global Mapper now includes the ability to easily cut, copy, and paste LiDAR points between layers  making this easy-to-use GIS application a great solution for efficiently organizing LiDAR data.

“This release is just a small taste of where this product is heading,” stated Blue Marble President, Patrick Cunningham “The next release of the LiDAR Module will include numerous major enhancements with robust functionality, so stay tuned”.

Additional upgrades to the LiDAR Module include a new “LIDAR_CLASSIFY script command” for automatically classifying ground points, an option to keep the original file offset/scale, or to specify a new one when exporting to LiDAR LAS/LAZ files. Also included is the ability to crop to a selected area when specifying the bounds to import from a LiDAR point cloud, and the ability to export point cloud to Esri File Geodatabases (GDB) as normal 3D point features.
