Gov. Martin O’Malley on Wednesday announced the launch of a new Maryland Web portal offering state data not accessible to the public before.
Through the portal, at data.maryland.gov, the public can view handgun permits, vendor payments, vehicle accidents, licensed veterinary clinics and per capita electricity consumption.
The portal was unveiled by O’Malley at a panel discussion in Annapolis co-hosted with the Future of Information Alliance, a partnership among O’Malley, the University of Maryland, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Archives and others.
In a statement, O’Malley said the portal was a move toward “information-age governing.”
“Big data is forever changing the way we manage, market, and move information, and in Maryland it is also changing the way we govern with better choices and better results,” O’Malley said
