The Metropolitan Utilities District has a long history of delivering clean drinking water to the citizens of metropolitan Omaha. The city’s first water treatment plant was built near the Missouri River by a private company in 1889, and the Legislature created the Metropolitan Water District in 1913. When the City acquired the gas system, the company was renamed the Metropolitan Utilities District. The District provides safe drinking water to 202,820 customers in Omaha, Bellevue, Bennington, Carter Lake, LaVista, Ralston, Waterloo and the Papio-Missouri Natural Resources District.
