5 Things on Friday #6

February 8, 2013 By Editor

A few gems to share with you this week including map of the US through the eyes of a New Yorker, Google streetview of the Grand Canyon  and some new data from the USDA… enjoy!

COOL IDEA! PBR Philadelphia Rock Paper Scissors Leauge – Yes indeed, the folks in PA have a great idea here in their very own rock, paper, scissors league. They have a great website and some really interesting material so heck, go ahead and maybe use this as an example to start your own league… perhaps even a rock, paper, scissors, lizard, spock league!

ESRI Weather Map Tracking Winter Storms – A new weather map from Esri has been released to help explore live storm reports, precipitation, and weather warnings with geo-tagged social content from Twitter, Flickr, and YouTube. See the real-time effects of the storm via social media posts. To change the search terms, go to the Social menu, click the settings icon, and update the keyword. See the map directly HERE

Mapping The Grand Canyon – Yes indeed, Google has done it again… this time taking the Street View cruisers off road to explore the Grand Canyon. Now you can kick back in your chair and explore the canyon and all its beauty and vastness via Google Street View’s new Grand Canyon Collection… wow!  See the Grand Canyon Collection HERE

2012 USDA CropScape Cropland Data Layer (CDL)@ 30m – This categorized geospatial product at 30m resolution is produced by U. S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service from satellite observation data and ground truth data. More map layers including river, lake layers and road layers at national and regional level are added. This categorized geospatial product at 30m resolution is produced by U. S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service from satellite observation data and ground truth data. User can access the state of interest only http://nassgeodata.gmu.edu/CropScape/StateAbbr (e.g. http://nassgeodata.gmu.edu/CropScape/VA).

A little fun with maps and a sweet, little gem I stumbled upon today… America as viewed by a New Yorker… I just love the “empty space caused by the stupid shape of Idaho”… LOL! Got any more awesome maps and examples or cartographic brilliance to share?? Ping me @gletham with your tips – Sourced from Funnyordie
