The International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) is just around the corner! On September 15, 2012, volunteers from all over the globe will come together to pick up marine debris from coastal areas. Sign up to join NOAA at one of its three sites in Washington, DC, Waikiki, HI, and Seattle, Washington, or find another location in your state on SignUptoCleanUp.org.
Background
The Ocean Conservancy’s ICC focuses on the marine debris problems plaguing our nation’s coastal areas, and on the human activities that produce debris:
- Recreational and shoreline activities
- Ocean/Waterway activities
- Smoking-related activities
- Dumping activities
- Medical/Personal hygiene
Through this approach, the Ocean Conservancy creates strategies to educate the public on the problems caused by debris and how to change their own behavior to stop this pollution at its source.
The Ocean Conservancy conducts follow-up workshops each year to engage ICC coordinators, regional Solid Waste Management Authority representatives, and other resource management agency members in training to integrate the ICC into more inclusive efforts to address marine debris sources and issues, especially related to recreational beach use and boating/fishing activities.
