Award-winning Mapping Application Provides Detailed Information to Citizens Jefferson County, Colorado JMAP Application wins third place at the 2012 Esri User Conference in the User Software Applications Fair
August 1, 2012 – Jefferson County, Colorado Government JMAP Application won third place in the Web Based GIS Application section of the User Software Application Fair this year at the Esri International User Conference. The application brings a greater level of information to the public in an easy-to-use web-based program. The application was built by North Line GIS as a collaborative effort with GIS staff from Jefferson County, Colorado.
The web map is part of an overall GIS update project. North Line GIS was contracted to develop a new application which could take advantage of the improved enterprise database design and be easily managed by the GIS staff. The new application is designed to work in a desktop browser environment as well as on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. According to Trip McLaughlin, Project Manager for North Line GIS, "Using the JavaScript API allows the application to function smoothly on desktop and mobile environments, while providing our clients with tools which make the site and application much easier to manage."
The new JMAP web-based mapping application will provide the public with information about a multitude of county services, including election information, parcels, special districts, permits, road maintenance, and other mapping based data in a single, self-service location. The map layers are organized into groups in the table of contents. The user is able to turn on or off map layers, search on multiple features such as active permits, and develop reports. Using the built-in tools, buffers of areas may be run to develop mailing labels for the selected parcels along with viewing the related assessor information. The mobile application features many of the same searches along with a user location tool to enable the GPS on the device to show the user’s location on the screen.
"Jefferson County is very pleased with the results of our collaborative approach with North Line GIS" said Barbara Morey County GIS Administrator. "We were able to meet our goals, providing an intuitive online map for our citizens and staff to use. We took advantage of the latest GIS technology and designed a frame work that our staff can maintain and enhance into the future."
North Line GIS worked closely with the Jefferson County GIS Department for the service and application development so they would have a thorough understanding of the complete development process and be able to edit, maintain and alter the application. The new application also has an internal version to provide more tools and information to county departments. Jefferson County GIS and North Line GIS are actively developing additions and enhancements to the site for a future release.
