Volvo Ocean Race Live streaming available July 2-3

July 2, 2012 By Editor

Having lived most of my life in port cities and also, after experiencing first-hand an awesome party in New Zealand years ago when the yachts from the Whitbread Around the World race came into Auckland New Zealand I’ve been a small fan of racing. But now that I’m a tech geek I’m really interested in the technology used to deliver live updates, information, news feeds and the like via such events. This week the Volvo Ocean Race is under way and live updates are being streamed to the Internet.  Each of the six VOR 70 boats has traveled some 39,000 nautical miles, at speeds of up to 30 knots in winds exceeding 50 mph. Inmarsat’s FleetBroadband 500 (FB500), FB150 and Inmarsat C services have performed with 100% reliability in the most extreme conditions.

As the six boats head for the finish line in Galway, each is making ground-breaking live transmissions. For some impressive 3D imagery and live blog updates and reports from the teams be sure to check out http://www.volvooceanrace.com/en/home.html

Be sure to visit the live racetracker map to check out the logs, way cool stuff!
