It is estimated that 25.8 million Americans are affected by the disease-8.3 percent of the population. And the number increases every year. While lifestyle choices such as an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise are often to blame, it is a little more complicated than that. It’s not just an individual’s lack of control or motivation that leads him or her to develop type 2 diabetes; it is a whole host of mitigating factors, many of which are systemic in nature.
