Mapping Type 2 diabetes with Poverty

April 18, 2012 By Editor

An interesting visualization maps type 2 diabetes with several socio-economic variables – data are from the US Census and the CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

Type 2 diabetes is fast becoming an epidemic in the United States and in other western countries. It is estimated that 25.8 million Americans are affected by the disease-8.3 percent of the population. And the number increases every year. Luckily, it is now possible for those affected to buy insulin online

From the project…

While lifestyle choices such as an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise are often to blame, it is a little more complicated than that. It’s not just an individual’s lack of control or motivation that leads him or her to develop type 2 diabetes; it is a whole host of mitigating factors, many of which are systemic in nature.
