A comprehensive selection of open sources and open course ware  in Earth Sciences from Penn State

We’ve all become very familiar with the idea/concept of Open… we have Open Data, Open Government initiatives, Open Source, etc… but something that should be very exciting to many professionals, students, and those interested in professional development is Open Educational Resources.

Yes indeed, if you sniff around the web you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that open educational resources (courses, modules and the like) are quite abundant. Of particular interest are the Open Educational Resources from The Penn state College of Earth and Mineral Sciences http://open.ems.psu.edu/courseware

The institution offers a number of courses freely available for use and re-use by teachers and educators around the Globe. The courses are available for non-commercial use and licensed under Creative Commons. 

A sampling of course available include:

  • EGEE 102: Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection
  • GEOG/EME 469:  Energy Industry Applications of GIS
