GISuser Today newsletter, Oct 20 – Atanas, Telmap, SuperGeo, Esri making news

October 21, 2011 By Editor

From the October 20, 2011 GISuser Today Newsletter…

An interesting event taking place on the West coast today as many agencies are hosting events to encourage earthquake awareness, safety, and preparedness. Here in B.C at 10:20 AM (PST) over 500,000 registered folks will participate in the Great B.C ShakeOut – @shakeoutBC. People that are registered have received information that will help them prepare for the big one. At 10:20 AM everyone will be asked to drop, cover, and hold on. Similar events are also taking place today along the coast in Washington State, Oregon, and California. This is an annual event that has gained much momentum, is complemented by a strong social media push, and has gained loads of momentum… I can’t help but think that there has to be some great opportunities here for the Geo developers, perhaps a mobile app to complement the efforts, some earthquake hazard mapping, creation of InfoGraphics, or ? Moving forward, I’ve shared details on the blog of the Atanas Entchev @Atanas deportation situation and related efforts of the GeoGeek social community who are spreading the word and offering up help to #freeatanas – an interesting and sad story of a Geo professional caught up in the ongoing, confusing, and messed up state of immigration in the USA.

A few Geo Tech news/PR items of interest that you’ll find on GISuser.com this week: New Mobile App for Families Rewards Kids for Checking-in – a foursquare=like app for iPhone caters to families; Apple iPhone (North America’s Top device) 4S adds GLONASS GPS Support – iPhone 4S specs now show GLONASS GPS; Companies Will Generate 50 Percent of Web Sales Via Their Social Presence and Mobile; TdhGIS – Vector based Spatial Analysis has been updated – The purpose of TdhGIS is to perform spatial analysis of data based on vector defined geometric data; Details on these PR found below…

Some updates of interest I hope you’ll enjoy via my AnyGeo blog (blog.gisuser.com); Details of the Black Hills Digital Mapping Association Conference; Thanks and a call to GeoGeeks To Help Free Atanas (A.T.) Entchev @Atanas #freeatanas; Apple iPhone 4S adds GLONASS GPS Support; iPhone 4 remains Top Device in North America, Android Passes Nokia; Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Is Here (Video) – a first look at the Galaxy Nexus.
