3-GIS Assists Franklin County Consortium With Alabama Storm Tracker

May 20, 2011 By Editor

Decatur, AL – May 12, 2011 – 3-GIS, a GIS software development and services company is assisting the Franklin County GIS Consortium, consisting of  fourteen agencies across Franklin County,  by developing the Alabama Storm Tracker URL  to review damage assessment data from the April 27 storms that devastated northern Alabama communities.

3-GIS, the developers of the latest technology in GIS mapping information systems, have been assisting the Franklin County Consortium in damage assessment.  3-GIS created the Alabama Storm Tracker URL, a service showing, not only the storm track, but also a fly-over from immediately after the tornado and post storm photos associated with each structure with the storm path.  The aerial photography for the damage assessment data was provided by The Atlantic Group, LLC to the GIS Consortium team and then passed over to 3-GIS and uploaded in to the system.  Franklin County GIS Manager, Michael Hughes and colleagues will continue to provide technical information from the affected areas that can be updated as needed to insure a comprehensive picture of the ravaged area.  3-GIS’s Alabama Storm Tracker URL is used by local community agencies to identify where they need to concentrate efforts for cleanup, power, water issues, FEMA for quick response, and others in the community to determine how and where to help.

“The work 3-GIS performed trimmed weeks off the recovery effort versus the old paper method,” Said David Palmer, Franklin County Engineer, “Providing maps and data to so many critical agencies, during a crisis of this magnitude, can be quite overwhelming.  The 3-GIS web solution streamlined that process allowing a much quicker and more efficient solution.  The benefits of providing relief more quickly and efficiently to devastated families are quite substantial”.

The work from 3-GIS and their partners is ongoing to continue to assist Franklin County in their recovery effort.
