Saco, Maine, Public Works Presented Asset Management Excellence Award

April 5, 2011 By Editor

Cityworks Is Integral Part of Comprehensive Asset Management Program

Sandy, UT —  Cityworks | Azteca Systems, Inc., the leading provider of GIS-centric management solutions, extends its congratulations to the City of Saco, Maine, a Cityworks client, for receiving the 2010 “Asset Management Excellence Award” from New England Water Environment Association (NEWEA).  The award was presented to Saco’s Public Works Department for their commitment and ongoing efforts in asset management at NEWA’s Annual Conference held in Boston in January 2011.

After completing the yearlong process of nomination, selection, and promotion of the 2010 awards recognizing outstanding water quality professionals, NEWEA recognized Saco Public Works as the recipient of the Asset Management Excellence Award.  The 45-member Department operates under the establishment of a comprehensive asset management program directed by Michael Bolduc, Director of Public Works.  Cityworks, seamlessly interwoven with ArcGIS, is used within most divisions of the Department and is a main component of their asset management program.  Cityworks tracks the history, condition, and maintenance of all City wastewater and collection system assets as well as a large majority of its facility assets.

“Cityworks is the keystone for Saco’s asset inventory and maintenance tracking,” stated Michael Bolduc.  “The program has allowed us to build our asset management program and provide better service delivery and lower costs to our customers.”

Doug Howard, Environmental Utilities Supervisor at Saco, further illustrates the City’s usage of the software: “Cityworks has become an integral piece of Saco’s asset management program and is the central piece of what we call our Customer Communication Plan.  It helps us attain our levels of service by tracking assets as well as communicating problems and resolutions to our workforce and residents and has been instrumental in organizing Saco’s workflow.  With the combination of GIS and Cityworks, our data is organized and maintained in one spot and is easy to access. ”

In addition to receiving the NEWA award, Saco’s success with their asset management program has been highlighted in additional ways.  Key components of the program have been presented at the Maine Rural Water Association and used as a case study by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) since 2007 for implementing principles from their advanced asset management workshop.

“We congratulate Saco for receiving NEWA’s Asset Management Excellence Award and applaud them for all their accomplishments,” states Brian Haslam, President of Azteca Systems.  “Saco’s asset management program is very successful – an award-winning case – and we‘re pleased Cityworks is a primary component of that.  Like Saco, Cityworks continually brings our clients into a new world of asset management and takes their operations to a whole new level.”

About the City of Saco
Saco’s 38.5 square miles are located in York County on Maine’s southern coast and is the tenth largest city in the state with an estimated population of 18,500.  With two growing business parks and a third under development, Sacco is a key area for both residential growth and industrial and commercial investment companies, including General Dynamics Armament Systems (also known by its former name, Saco Defense).  Because of its amusement parks, Ferry Beach State Park, and close proximity to Old Orchard Beach, the city supports much tourism during the summer months.  Saco is rich in American history and many of its buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
