Tasmania’s Aurora Energy Selects MapText’s Webmap Labeling Software

April 15, 2010 By GISuser

Monmouth Junction, NJ, USA & Tasmania, Australia – April 15, 2010. Tasmania’s electricity distribution network service provider Aurora Energy has chosen MapText’s Label-Web solution to enrich presentation of its intranet-based GeoMedia WebMap Professional service.

Aurora has used GeoMedia WebMap since 1998 and until implementation of Label-Web was forced to replicate hundreds of thousands of manually placed text labels for assets, sometimes on a daily basis.  Aurora also replicated transport, drainage and place name text features from their core electricity model.  These processes added significant load between servers to present labels on WebMap.

Since implementing Label-Web Aurora has more than halved the number of records being migrated from the core electrical model.

Tim Wicks, GIS Project Developer at Aurora Energy, says “In our initial implementation of GeoMedia WebMap we were forced to replicate pole, transformer and switch asset labels for each unique asset for presentation in WebMap.  Our 280,000 pole asset labels were replicated and synchronised one-for-one [for each pole one text object was required] yet for transformer and switch assets we were forced to replicate multiple labels for each asset from our electrical model.”

“Significant effort went into ensuring these text objects were displayed at an appropriate size relative to each asset but no matter how hard we tried display issues such as overlapping text still occurred due to complex scaling rules and we only ever dreamed of labels following curves.”

“By implementing Label-Web we were able to cease replicating and synchronising asset text objects completely.  Label-Web also allowed us to drop the annual process of manually generating text labels in GeoMedia for transport and drainage features as they were updated.  This process would take up to two days to complete!”

Mr. Wicks added: “Label-Web allows us to focus on our core business – managing our electricity distribution network to serve the people of Tasmania.  With very little effort to set up the MapText solution, Label-Web’s text placement engine does all of the work for us and presents our 1,100 staff with a clear and concise labelling solution.”

MapText’s Director of Sales & Business Development, Rishi Mehra, also expressed his satisfaction: “We are glad to have provided Aurora Energy with a solution that resulted in measurable financial benefits for Aurora and proved the exceptional return on investment of our text placement software.”
