Phoenix, Ariz., April 27, 2010-The Geospatial Information & Technology Association (GITA) announced today that GIS Consortium, Des Plaines, Ill., was named a recipient of the 2010 GITA Excellence Award.
The award recognizes the dedication, insight, and high degree of initiative in the outstanding application of geospatial technology. The award was presented during the Henry A. Emery Awards Luncheon of GITA’s Geospatial Infrastructure Solutions Conference, being held April 25-29, 2010, at the Phoenix Convention Center in Phoenix, Ariz.
The GIS Consortium (GISC) is a group of local communities working together to develop cost-effective solutions for geographic information systems (GIS) and related technologies. The organization was formed in 1999, and consists of cities and villages that are challenging traditional forms of community-based information systems.
The GIS Consortium recognizes that small- and medium-size communities face special challenges when implementing technology. by collaborating, communities unlock opportunities otherwise unavailable because of complexity or cost. The mission of the GIS Consortium is to create value by managing cost and risk in a cooperative environment where all members, regardless of size, will succeed. This was the goal and today the GISC has grown to include 16 community members. The GISC believes this approach will be the model of the future as communities are increasingly asked to do more with less.
"The GIS Consortium model illustrates how local governments can collaborate to reduce costs while maintaining obligations to the public. Being awarded the GITA Excellence Award affirms the hard work and innovative thinking that our members have demonstrated since the GIS Consortium was started over 10 years ago," said Mary Anderson, president of the GIS Consortium.
