Social Location Experiment – How Do 11 Popular Social Checkin Apps Stack up?

March 19, 2010 By Editor

Does foursquare know where you are? Can GoWalla identify what shop you are near? Can Yelp really position you inside or near your favorite bar?

With so many different ways to check-in and share your location with colleagues and friends (think Loopt, Gowalla, foursquare, pegshot, Yelp, yadayada…) it’s no wonder that selecting an app can be a challenge. It’s been my observation that frequent users of social location sharing apps like foursquare and GoWalla get bored and bail on their usage, typically because of a lack of benefit for crowd-sourcing their personal information. However, another reason for usage to slip is user frustration that results from applications simply not recognizing where the user is located. And so, over a coffee and some WiFi, we test 11 popular social media location-aware Checkin services to see how well they identify our position… you may be surprised at some of the results.
