Did you know that ArcGIS 9.4 was recently [officially] renamed to ArcGIS 10.0? This was a hot topic flying around Twitter tonight as details of the official announcement have been shared among the Geo Tweeters still hanging around after “business hours”. I took a few minutes to listen to an ESRI podcast with Jack Dangermond.
From Jack… the team has been working on this release.. and he notes how this [release] is much bigger than a dot release, hence the version jump. 10.0 is Important because it makes the UI much easier, expect more integrated productivity tools; map creation is easier as is editing, enhancements to web editing… imagine much more User Generated Content (UGC) on the web; better management of imagery (desktop and server). At this release ArcGIS become a full 3D GIS, analysis, visualization.. one can do virtually everything they do in 2D in 3D.
Other highlights include:
- The introduction of temporal at all levels.
- The server is getting much stronger (particularly for image management)
- Many new Web2.0 tools… important as many are moving towards GIS in the cloud.. support for citizen science and other user generated scenarios.
- Integrated tech support and feedback into the development of the product (more than 2,000 Beta sites are in place)
- Look for more “coaching” online.. with much better training, support, and documentation available to the user.
- A whole new world for volunteered information (UGC)
Funny that everyone seems hung up on the name change (this solicited a chuckle from Jack as really, it’s a small part of the process). Dangermond noted the following (HUGE)… “At this release ArcGIS become a full 3D GIS, analysis, visualization.. one can do virtually everything they do in 2D in 3D.”
So, when will you get it? According to Jack you can expect 10.0 to ship mid-late Q2 – certainly before the user conference.For more on ArcGIS 10.0 see HERE
