10 Useful GIS, mapping, and Geospatial resources for Haiti Earthquake Response Effort

January 23, 2010 By Editor

Keeping abreast of what GIS and Geo tech resources are available for mapping Haiti and working on Haiti response and relief effort projects is no simple task. New resources seem to come and go, weblinks change, and information is coming in at all hours of the day.

Here’s a small yet very useful collection of Geo Tech Community resources that are useful to those needing information on GIS related resources. Did I miss anything? If so feel free to send details to info at gisuser.com or ping me on twitter @gletham

Carbon Cloud & OSM Resources – http://carboncloud.blogspot.com/
Updates from the CarbonCloud and Carbon Project n WMS services and more. Of note, CubeWerx and The Carbon Project have deployed a Cascading Web Map Service (WMS) as part of the growing open information network for the nation of Haiti. The service is being posted on CrisisCommons.org and may be accessed using Google Earth, Gaia, OpenStreetMap (OSM) tools and others at –
http://portal.cubewerx.com/cubewerx/cubeserv/cubeserv.cgi?CONFIG=haiti&SERVICE=WMS&request=GetCapabilities.

The team also has information on accessinng OpenStreetMap as a WFS see http://carboncloud.blogspot.com/2010/01/openstreetmap-deployed-as-wfs-for-haiti.html. Speaking OSM, @wonderchook has compiled a useful "how to map roads" video for those wanting/needing to update OSM data… see http://www.gisuser.com/content/view/19530/2/.

There’s also a "how to" video posted on how to map crisi camps using OSM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oio1jY8WNig. Both videos are also online at http://imaphaiti.com/iMapHaiti.html

Crisis Comons http://crisiscommons.org/
CrisisCommons is a grassroots movement providing tips, tools, resources, and community for techies. Fromm the group… We are an international volunteer network of professionals drawn together by a call to service. We create technological tools and resources for responders to use in mitigating disasters and crises around the world. This is also the place to stay informed about Crisis Camp – see also See @CrisisCamp and the Wiki at http://wiki.crisiscommons.org/wiki/Main_Page

Google Crisis Response Page – http://www.google.com/relief/haitiearthquake/index.html
Google has created a home where they are aggregating information and resources for the technology user and techie that’s looking to help in some way. You’ll find information on charitable orgs as well as information on other ways to contribute help. Thos with spatial data can also contribute their data via MapMaker see http://www.google.com/relief/haitiearthquake/index.html#imagery. Data can be viewed and downloaded as KMLs.

The cool team at FortiusOne (think GeoComons) has shared with us details of their Haiti dashboard – geospatial information resource. From GeoCommons, "we are working with CrisisCommons.org to collect data to support humanitarian relief efforts in Haiti." See http://news.geocommons.com/haitiquake. The team aslo has a number of related data pointers available via their Finder! service – see http://finder.geocommons.com/search?limit=10&page=3&query=haitiquake

GIS Data from Harvard http://cegrp.cga.harvard.edu/content/haiti-earthquake-data
At the earthquake geospatial research portal, the team at Harvard has aggregated and is serving up geospatial data products via their server. A number of data layers are available for download

GeoEye Corp has a homepage on their website with all the relevant information regarding their data products. Additionally, Google has a resource where satellite imagery products are available. See http://www.google.com/relief/haitiearthquake/geoeye.html. Google also has an archive of 15cm imagery at http://www.google.com/relief/haitiearthquake/imagery.html

Earth imagery provider DigitalGlobe also has a resource where those requiring access to their satellite imagery can make a request. See http://dgl.us.neolane.net/res/dgl/survey/CES_H.jsp

GIS leader, ESRI has a gateway online where they are posting Haiti relief related resources and information, see http://www.esri.com/services/disaster-response/earthquakes/resources.html. The ESRI Geo Flex Viewer has been evolving over the past couple of weeks with a number of updates including the ability to search and display geotagged Twitter Tweets. See http://geoss.esri.com/geoviewer

ERDAS has a section on their website where they are archiving anything Haiti related including how and where to access more imagery and web services. See http://www.erdas.com/HaitianRelief/tabid/327/Default.aspx

OpenStreetMap OSM Open Route Service is a special resource for those needing access to OSM for Haiti. http://openls.geog.uni-heidelberg.de/osm-haiti/. Some online help with how to work with OSM can be found at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Haiti#2010_Earthquake_Response. There’s also a useful resource about OSM tags that can be found at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Humanitarian_OSM_Tags

For more links to GIS and geospatial data resources see James’ page at http://www.spatiallyadjusted.com/2010/01/13/community-geospatial-links-to-haiti/
