Urban Infrastructure Monitoring with Space-based Radar – Free Webinar

On Wednesday June 25th MDA Geospatial Services is holding a free webinar on the use of space-based Synthetic Aperture Radar for Urban Infrastructure Monitoring. We thought that your user community might be interested in learning about this capability, and so I thought I would pass along this information, in the hope that you might share it with your membership.

Urban infrastructure monitoring is a critical problem for rapidly growing cities, and new techniques are required that provide insight into the state of the infrastructure that so many people rely on. MDA has developed a number of techniques that people responsible for managing urban infrastructure can use to better understand the state of their environment. Most prominently, MDA uses InSAR, a radar technique that uses two or more SAR images to generate maps of surface deformation, using differences in the phase of the waves returning to the satellite. This technique allows us to measure millimetre-to-centimetre-scale changes in deformation in the urban environment. Examples of this include surface deformation on airport runways, movement in bridges and subsidence of tunnels for mass transit.

MDA Geospatial Services is one of the world’s leading InSAR providers, and delivers operationally-focused InSAR solutions to customers across the globe. During this webinar, we will review our current InSAR technique, Homogenous Distributed Scatterer (HDS)-InSAR that exploits both persistent point and distributed scatterers by using adaptive multi-looking of statistically homogenous pixel neighbourhoods. The adaptive filtering reduces the noise of smooth, low-backscatter areas such as asphalt and bare ground, while optimally preserving the spatial resolution to increase both the accuracy and geographic precision of the deformation result. We’ll also look at a number of case studies based on RADARSAT-2 image stacks that capture representative examples of urban infrastructure including buildings, bridges, tarmac, and roads.

Webinar gvSIG Educa/Batoví, An Educational Tool for Teaching GIS in Schools (June 11th)

The ICA-OSGeo Lab Network and MundoGEO are now pleased to inform the eighth webinar of the ”Open Geospatial Science & Applications” webinar series on June 11th. The webinar will be open and free to all on first come register basis.

This webinar will be gvSIG Educa/Batoví, a customization of the gvSIG Desktop Open Source GIS, adapted as a tool for the education of issues that have a geographic component. It is based on gvSIG and it was originally developed to promote the use of GIS in educational settings around the Plan Ceibal initiative (Uruguay).

The aim of gvSIG Educa/Batoví is to provide educators with a tool that helps students to analyse and understand space, and which can be adapted to different levels or education systems. gvSIG Educa/Batoví is not only useful for the teaching of geographic material, but can also be used for learning any subject that contains a spatial component such as history, economics, natural science, sociology. gvSIG Educa/Batoví facilitates learning by letting students interact with the information, by adding a spatial component to the study of the material, and by facilitating the assimilation of concepts through visual tools such as thematic maps.

This webinar is suitable for anybody related in some way with teaching GIS, specially those that work with children and teenagers. The speaker will be Sergio Acosta y Lara, from the National Direction of Surveying of the Ministry of Transport and Public Works of Uruguay.

Attendees will be able to interact with the speakers by sending their comments and questions through chat. All attendees of this web seminar will receive certificates for their participation.

Web Seminar – UltraCam Osprey Prime and UltraMap 3.2

At the ASPRS conference in Louisville, Kentucky, Microsoft’s UltraCam business unit introduced an updated version of the UltraCam Osprey, a digital aerial system that combines a high performing photogrammetric nadir camera with oblique image capture capabilities. The new version of the UltraCam Osprey has been redesigned with an 80mm focal length to enhance its nadir collection performance at higher altitudes without reducing resolution and the forward- and backward-looking cameras are redesigned to be single cones instead of two double cones to simplify the hardware and improve reliability.

The UltraCam Osprey is also fully supported in the UltraMap workflow software system. The ability to perform aerotriangulation (AT) and dense matching allows for the creation of high accuracy point clouds, DSM, DTM, DSMorthos and DTMorthos (traditional orthos).

In this web seminar we will talk about:

•             General camera design

•             Special features

•             Sample images

•             Achieved accuracies shown with a sample project

•             Integration into the UltraMap workflow

Join Microsoft’s UltraCam experts in this 45-minute session to learn how you can optimize image quality flying an UltraCam.
