Herding Ball: The City Dog’s Secret to Staying Happy and Fulfilled

May 27, 2025 By GISuser

Let’s face it—herding dogs weren’t meant to sit still. Whether it’s a Border Collie, Aussie, Heeler, or Kelpie, these breeds are wired for one thing: work. They’ve spent generations mastering movement, direction, and control over livestock. But today, most of them are living far from farms and flocks—in apartments, suburbs, and city streets.

So what happens when a herding dog doesn’t have a job? You get a very smart, very under-stimulated pup. That’s why we created CollieBall, the original herding ball designed specifically to satisfy those deep instincts through play.

A Ball with Purpose

In 2020, while evacuated from the Santa Cruz fire, we found ourselves in a temporary space, trying to keep our dog Huckleberry calm and occupied. Walks weren’t cutting it. She needed a purpose. So we built her something that mimicked the movement and challenge of herding—a big, bounceable ball she could chase, direct, and push.

What started as a DIY fix for one stressed pup quickly became a tool we knew others needed, too.

What Makes CollieBall Different?

Unlike typical fetch toys, CollieBall, The Original Herding Ball for Dogs, isn’t meant to be picked up. Its large size makes it impossible to bite, encouraging dogs to interact with it using their bodies—nudging, circling, and driving it forward, just like they would with livestock.

Each ball features:

  • A bouncy inner layer (an exercise ball) for movement and response

  • A durable outer shell made from tough ballistic fabric

  • A deflatable core, making it ideal for storage or travel

This isn’t just a toy. It’s an enrichment tool that helps your dog feel useful, even without sheep in sight.

Why Urban Dogs Love It

Life in the city can be limiting for herding breeds. Parks and sidewalks don’t offer the kind of focused challenge their instincts crave. CollieBall turns your backyard, dog park, or even a patch of grass into a working zone.

With just a few minutes of play a day, your pup can burn energy, calm their mind, and stay mentally sharp.

Key benefits:

  • Mental stimulation tailored to herding instincts

  • Physical exercise that doesn’t rely on running miles

  • Helps curb unwanted behaviors like barking, chewing, or anxiety

  • Packs flat—perfect for city living or road trips

From Dog Parents Like You

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“CollieBall changed everything. Our Aussie went from pacing and barking to focused and fulfilled. It’s like she finally has a job she loves—even in our tiny yard.”

A Herding Ball Made with Love

CollieBall was built out of necessity, but it’s grown into something so much bigger. From our pup to yours, it’s more than just play—it’s a way to reconnect with your dog’s nature and give them what they truly need.

Because for herding dogs, fun isn’t just running—it’s working. And with CollieBall, they get both.
