We answer the 5 most common questions about VPS (virtual private server) hosting

February 4, 2023 By GISuser

When should you switch to VPS hosting? What programs can be installed on a rented VPS? What is a VPS anyway? When should I rent a server?

Our clients often ask us these and many other questions. In this article, we decided to answer the most popular of them. Only the most relevant – what interests our customers who want to rent a server.

1. What is VPS hosting?

VPS (virtual private server) is a virtual private server. Essentially, VPS hosting mimics a dedicated server, but it uses a shared server environment.

Your physical servers will be located in the data center. And VPS is a part of a physical server in a data center that has its own operating system, disk space and bandwidth.

2. How does VPS hosting work?

VPS hosting can be compared to using virtualized OS software. Let’s say that you have a MacBook, but you suddenly need to use Windows OS to run a certain program.

Instead of buying a separate Windows PC, you can use software like VirtualBox or VMware. These programs will allow you to run a virtualized version of Windows on your Mac computer.

The same can be said about VPS. You can run several different virtualized servers on one physical server. And each of these virtual servers will act as if they were separate dedicated servers.

3. What are the benefits of renting a VPS server?

If you need a unique hosting setup or have a large site with a lot of traffic, then you have probably thought about getting your own dedicated server. But there is only one problem. Physical servers are expensive!

This is where VPS comes to the rescue. VPS can be fully customized to your liking and scale with your site as traffic levels and resource needs increase.

In addition, a virtual server for Windows or Linux is also more secure than shared hosting, as you will be the only site using the resources of the server.

4. What is the difference between managed and unmanaged VPS hosting?

With an unmanaged VPS, you will be responsible for general server administration tasks, maintenance, security, and more. When using such VPS hosting, you will need some technical background to be able to manage your server efficiently.

Deltahost has a different approach – renting a server from us, you only deal with your sites. We will do the rest of the work for you: set up the server, perform scheduled maintenance, provide security, and much more.

5. What software can I install on a rented VPS hosting?

With Deltahost VPS hosting, you will have much more control over the software that runs your server.

The only limits placed on the software you can run are the operating system the server is running on and the total amount of memory you have allocated. We can rent a server for both Windows and Linux.

I hope the answers above have helped answer your most common questions. Learn more about our services and rent Deltahost VPS hosting here!
