September 22, 2021 By GISuser

SANTA FE, New Mexico, 22 September 2021 – Descartes Labs, a leading geospatial intelligence firm originating out of Los Alamos National Laboratory, is pleased to announce the hiring of Janie Robinson as its new Head of Government. Robinson brings more than 20 years of National Security related experience in both government and commercial capacities.

New Head of Government, Janie Robinson

Robinson will be available to meet with attendees at the upcoming AWS Summit Washington D.C. where Descartes Labs will present a vision for planetary scale geospatial analytics and global change detection. Descartes Labs recently built one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers using Amazon Web Services (AWS), coming in at #40 on the annual TOP500 list.

“No one is better positioned than Janie Robinson to lead our government activities as Descartes Labs expands into new roles serving the DoD and Intelligence Community (IC),” said Terry Cunningham, Descartes Labs CEO. “We have the technology to deliver actionable insights derived from any geospatial data set for U.S. commanders and warfighters anywhere in the world.”

In her position as Head of Government, Robinson is tasked with continuing to build the Descartes Labs business serving the U.S. government. Special focus will be placed on creating the right products and solutions to meet the unique needs of government organizations in every phase of their respective missions.

“Descartes Labs is a force to reckoned with, and I am excited to be here,” said Robinson. “With our petabyte scale, cloud based, digital twin of the earth, we can find, monitor, and make predictions about events, places, commodities or objects anywhere in the world. Further, we can push these actionable planetary scale insights to the edge – offering government customers next generation intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, situational awareness for space, alternative position, navigation, and timing (APNT) approaches, and other analytic solutions. The art of the possible is limitless with Descartes Labs.”

Robinson began her government career in a DoD cooperative education program while working towards her Bachelor of Science (BS) Electrical Engineering (EE) degree at University of North Carolina – Charlotte. She later earned a Master’s in EE at Johns Hopkins.

“The events of 9/11 helped clarify my career path,” said Robinson. “From that point, I wanted to support my country in any capacity where I could add value.”

Robinson has added value everywhere she has worked, including seven years at DoD before pivoting to the private sector to assist commercial companies in putting state-of-the-art technology into the hands of the people who needed them. Her defense-related work has included positions at Booz Allen, AWS, Oracle, and Hughes Defense.

In 2016, Robinson was honored with the Culper Ring Award by then Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Gen. James Clapper, for significant contributions to the national security mission of the U.S. Government.

Outside of the office, Robinson has spearheaded activities related to supporting women in leadership roles as a founding member of Chief DC and encouraging young women to pursue science technology engineering and math (STEM) careers the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). She also volunteers with the United States Services Organization (USO) supporting the active duty and retired military communities.

Janie Robinson looks forward to seeing colleagues and meeting Descartes Labs clients at the AWS Summit Washington, D.C., where Descartes Labs will be participating in presentations and other activities. The Summit is being held Sept. 27-29, 2021, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

Attendees of GEOINT 2021 are invited to meet Janie Robinson in the Descartes Labs booth #2415 where it will be demonstrating the latest breakthroughs in multimodal sensor data fusion and advanced big data analytics and virtualization. GEOINT 2021 will be held Oct. 5-8 in St. Louis.
