Progress Energy Selects Telvent for Fully Integrated DSCADA/DMS as Part of Smart Grid-Distribution System Demand Response (DSDR) Project
Ambitious, state-of-the-art electricity delivery system will apply Telvent’s strategy for network-wide, real-time information management
Telvent (NASDAQ: TLVT), the IT company for a sustainable and secure world, announced that Progress Energy has chosen to integrate within the Progress Energy Carolinas (PEC) enterprise a new, fully redundant Distribution SCADA/DMS system from Telvent’s Smart Grid Solution Suite. The implementation will support the goals of Progress Energy’s Distribution System Demand Response (DSDR) project, designed to enable PEC to reduce peak demand and maintain consistent voltage to all customers served by the feeder, without increasing peak generation capacity.
The company is pursuing a balanced strategy for a secure energy future that includes aggressive energy efficiency programs, investments in renewable energy technologies and a state-of-the-art electricity system. Its five-year Smart Grid-DSDR Project calls for a $260M investment in a robust system of advanced technology, telecommunications, equipment, and operating controls.
Telvent will contribute to this multi-year initiative by providing software, hardware, and engineering, installation, start-up and commissioning services in three significant phases. It will upgrade the current version of the Telvent supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system to a state-of-the-art OASyS DNA 7.5 SCADA. Telvent will next integrate the new SCADA with the Telvent Distribution Management System (DMS) to process data from line sensors, analyze power flow, determine MW-reduction capability, and execute commands to control and operate equipment. This approach will utilize demand reduction during peak load times to deliver the megawatts (MWs) needed by the system during high demand periods. The solution also will be utilized continuously to minimize losses on the distribution system and optimize efficiency.
Finally, Telvent will be providing extended DMS functionality to include such DMS Power Applications as Sensor Placement, Low Voltage Functionality, and Load Profile Tools by Dec 2011. The Telvent-supplied DSCADA/DMS will integrate with the Progress Energy GIS and other enterprise systems through industry-standard, open architecture methods.
"Telvent is proud of the confidence our customer has shown in our Smart Grid Solution suite, a suite that reduces peak demand and optimizes network assets as well as gives customers choice and control over energy usage," emphasized Larry Stack, president of Telvent’s Energy business. "The PGN Distribution System Demand Response (DSDR) project demonstrates that our highly distributed, secure, and integrated systems architecture provides the means to get this done, to provide the peak demand reduction capability from DSDR, and enable future smart grid capabilities to happen for Progress Energy."
"We are pioneering an advanced distribution grid that we can use as a demand-side resource to reduce load during peak times," said Bobby Simpson, project manager of the Distribution System Demand Response project for Progress Energy Carolinas. "Our partnership with Telvent is a key component of that effort."
