He is a Goldwin Smith Professor of Astronomy at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and is the principal investigator for the science payload on the MER Project. He earned his Ph.D. from Cornell in 1981 and is a former student of the late Carl Sagan. Dr. Squyres has participated in many of NASA’s planetary exploration missions, including the Voyager mission to Jupiter and Saturn, the Magellan mission to Venus, and the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous mission. His book, Roving Mars: Spirit, Opportunity, and the Exploration of the Red Planet (2005) became a Disney IMAX film narrated by Steve and the late Paul Newman.
