Redlands, California—A free seminar this month will demonstrate how to quickly begin using ArcGIS Online, a collection of GIS Web services hosted by ESRI. ArcGIS Online provides ready-to-use 2D maps and 3D globes, as well as reference layers and functional tasks that can be easily accessed via the Web and used in ArcGIS Desktop 9.2.
Introduction to ArcGIS Online will air on ESRI’s Training and Education Web site at www.esri.com/training on July 19 at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 3:00 p.m. Pacific daylight time.
ArcGIS Online offers basemap foundations that can be easily used in ArcGIS Desktop applications including ArcGIS Explorer. ArcGIS Desktop users can connect to ArcGIS Online and access a wide variety of content at no cost including imagery, streets, shaded relief, and topographic maps. ArcGIS Online makes available seamless, high-resolution imagery at approximately 1-meter resolution for the contiguous United States and 2.5- to 15-meter resolution for the world. Visit www.esri.com/arcgisonline to learn more and register.
Using ArcGIS Desktop, users can add their own local data on top of ArcGIS Online services. They can also author and publish their own content and tasks and fuse them with content and tasks from ArcGIS Online to perform a variety of GIS functions.
The seminar’s presenters will give an overview of ArcGIS Online, the ArcGIS Online Web site, and how these services can be used effectively in ArcGIS Desktop. Demonstrations will show how to access the free map and globe layers inside ArcMap and ArcGIS Explorer. They also will talk about how ArcGIS Server technology is used in ArcGIS Online as well as discuss the relationship between ArcGIS Online and ArcWeb Services.
The presenters will review what content is available through ArcGIS Online plus explain how to obtain the same data published through ArcGIS Online for local or disconnected use. Listeners also will learn how to contribute their own content via the ArcGIS Online Content Sharing Program.
A broadband Internet connection and an ESRI Global Account are needed to watch the seminar. Creating a global account is easy and free. It only takes a few minutes to set up by visiting www.esri.com/lts, clicking Login, and registering your name and address.
