Surveyors, Engineers, and GIS Professionals Will Come Together for the Fourth Annual Survey and GIS Summit
Redlands, California—Surveyors, geographic information system (GIS) professionals, engineers, and others will come together at the fourth annual ESRI Survey and GIS Summit to explore business, technology, and collaboration opportunities across the industries. The summit, taking place August 5–8, 2006, in San Diego, California, is for both ESRI software users and nonusers. The more than 400 expected attendees will have the opportunity to learn and network through presentations, technical demonstrations, and discussions led by industry experts. Pre-registration for the summit exceeds all previous years. On Site registration will be available during the summit at the Survey Summit kiosk in the San Diego Convention Center.
“The Survey and GIS Summit offers a unique opportunity to participate and interact with surveying and GIS professionals from around the world and learn how an investment in GIS helps you deliver a total geospatial package to your clients,” says John Hohol, ACSM/FIG.
This year’s keynote presenter will be Wendy Lathrop, PLS, who will discuss business opportunities for surveyors and how they can manage internal business operations and provide new services to GIS data consumers. Lathrop is licensed as a professional land surveyor in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland and as a professional planner in New Jersey. She represented the ACSM to the Technical Mapping Advisory Council of the Federal Emergency Management Agency from 1995 to 2000. Lathrop served as president of both the New Jersey Society of Professional Land Surveyors and the National Society of Professional Surveyors.
An industry executive panel entitled, Business Opportunities for Surveyors in GIS will feature visionaries from surveying industry leaders Trimble, Topcon, Leica, and the National Geodetic Survey who will discuss opportunities for surveying and GIS and how their organizations are leading collaboration efforts. Moderated by ACSM executive director Curt Sumner, this panel will focus on the direction of the industry and discuss how surveyors can take full advantage of new opportunities.
Other special events include a closing session by Professional Surveyor Magazine Intersect columnists Janet Jackson, GISP, and Randy Rambeau, PLS. They will look at the business issues of surveying and GIS and discuss their intersection, overlap, synergies, and the benefits of having both practices in the same company. This important and entertaining forum will take questions from the audience to help convey that there might not be a gap at all to be bridged but rather opportunities to be exploited.
Summit breakout sessions will give attendees a look at their peers’ projects as they discuss GIS integration and implementation in areas such as
· Business of Surveying
· Land Management
· Geodetic Control
· GPS Technology
· Engineering and Engineering Design
· Education Programs
The summit coincides with the 2006 ESRI International User Conference. Summit registration includes attendance at User Conference Plenary Session, Exhibit Pavilion, Map Gallery and Reception, and Academic GIS Program Fair.
