BOULDER, CO -Vexcel Corporation, a global leader in mapping and photogrammetric products and services, announced today that it sold 22 of its UltraCam large format digital aerial cameras in 2005, representing 44% of the digital aerial camera market (large-format and those used in broad-area photogrammetric mapping).
This is the second year of market leadership for the Vexcel camera, having captured 38% of the market already in 2004, its first year on the market.
“The accelerated transition from film to digital in the aerial mapping industry is evident by the cumulative annual global sales figures reported since the first digital aerial camera was introduced in 2001,” reports Dr. Franz Leberl, founder of Vexcel and President of Vexcel Austria, the principal force behind the UltraCam development. “Since that time, the count has gone from 6 in 2002, 16 in 2003, 50 in 2004, and now roughly 100 in 2005-doubling the sales reported for 2004. And the Vexcel UltraCam is responsible for 38% of that. Vexcel is clearly leading the digital photogrammetry revolution with the UltraCam once again the world’s best selling digital aerial camera.”
Leberl cites ease of operation, superior image quality, modularity and versatility, superior performance, compatibility with the photogrammetric legacy, and the potential for increased production efficiencies combined with faster delivery to end-users of data products as reasons why the Vexcel camera has so quickly taken the leading position in the aerial camera market.
About the UltraCam
The UltraCam is a large format digital aerial camera with a base panchromatic resolution of 11,500 x 7,500 pixels in addition to four-color channels (red, green, blue and near-infrared). Imagery is collected at better than 12 bits per channel and at a rate of up to one frame per second. This permits the camera to outperform conventional analog film cameras by collecting imagery that is notably clear of film grain noise and with increased dynamic range. It is capable of providing large-scale urban mapping with very small pixels of 3 cm while maintaining high overlap as well as large-area coverage where the UltraCam’s fast imaging and multi-spectral features allow generation of innovative products and services at rapid turn around times.
