Value of subcontract option to Avineon estimated at more than $3 million
Alexandria, Va. – Jan. 10, 2006 – Avineon, Inc., a successful provider of IT, engineering, geospatial and program management services, announced that Harris Corporation has exercised option year two of an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) subcontract with Avineon. The U.S. Census Bureau originally awarded the MAF/TIGER® AIP (Master Address File/Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing Accuracy Improvement Project) contract to Harris Corporation in June 2002. Harris Corporation is the prime contractor and Avineon is a subcontractor on the Program.
The MAF/TIGER databases are used to support the mapping, geographic analysis and Geographic Information System (GIS) activities of the U.S. Census Bureau in meeting the statistical data needs of its many customers. The MAF is designed to be a complete and current list of all addresses and locations where people live and work, covering an estimated 115 million residences, as well as 60 million businesses and other structures in the United States. The TIGER portion of the project is a digital database that identifies the type, location and name of streets, rivers, railroads and other geographic features, and geospatially defines their relationships to each other, to the MAF addresses, and to numerous other entities. The two databases are maintained by the U.S. Census Bureau’s Geography Division.
Avineon’s primary role is realignment of existing TIGER data to an improved reference dataset consisting of aerial imagery and ancillary vector data. The end dataset will result in a more spatially accurate GIS, enabling Census Bureau field personnel to locate streets and addresses during the 2010 census and beyond.
“Avineon’s performance on the project has consistently fulfilled the requirements of Harris Corporation and the U.S. Census Bureau with an accuracy rate of more than 98 percent,” said Victoria Carlin, subcontracts manager for Harris Corporation. “Avineon’s quality work and on-time delivery of action requirements were instrumental in the successful completion of option year one on the MAF/TIGER project.”
During option year one of the subcontract, Avineon delivered data for 242 counties with 100 percent of the deliveries on or before the scheduled date. Avineon’s consistent high-quality work in processing large volumes of geospatial data prompted Harris Corporation to award the company its Supplier Excellence Small Business Supplier of the Year award for 2004 from a pool of 18,000 companies.
“We’re excited to have the opportunity to continue working with an established industry leader such as Harris Corporation to create an advanced, digital database for the U.S. Census Bureau that accurately reflects geographic census data,” said Gary Wilkison, vice president of geospatial and engineering services for Avineon.
