ePodunk… mapping & profiling North American communities

November 17, 2005 By GISuser

epodunkNeed a community profile? Search no more! ePodunk is a fabulous educational geography resource providing community profiles, demographic data, and much more. No geography resource is complete without maps and ePodunk delivers. Users can access detailed profiles of pretty much any community on record (25,000+) as well as special reports based on Census data such as a look at ethnic communities and ancestry maps. The portal offers visitors a U.S. and now a Canadian version… 2 thumbs up for this one!

Navigating the site is a breeze. Simply select a town or county from a lengthy list and details profiles are at your fingertips. Statistics on crime, emplyment, business, mortality, the environment, government, and much more are provided.

Profile categories have been provided for the following major categories:

  • cities
  • counties
  • airports
  • cemetaries
  • colleges
  • libraries
  • museums
  • newspapers

Of interest, ePodunk has recently launched a Canadian version. I perform a quick search on Victoria, BC and find a detailed profile of the BC capital. The requisite map is provided to put the search into a geographic context and an added bonus, a pretty attractive work of art of a major landmark is provided as an e-card… to test I blast myself a greeting card about Victoria… pretty nice!

Finally, in addition to the community profiles, ePodunk also provides some interesting reports on other topics of interest. These include a look at the geographic dispersion of Katrina evacuees, the fastest growing counties, and even Starbucks per capita.
