Emergency Responders Track Equipment and Stay Connected With Satellite Communications Solutions from Orbit One
September 6, 2005 – Bozeman, MT – Orbit One Communications (OOC) www.orbit-one.com has supplied thousands of satellite telephones and satellite-based asset tracking units to national, state and local agencies that are leading relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Orbit One is a satellite communications solutions provider for professionals who require reliable, secure 24×7 communications in remote locations. Since it was established in 2000, OOC has provided satellite communications products and services over the Globalstar network to thousands of clients across North America, including state and federal government agencies, federal disaster incident management teams, emergency medical service (EMS) providers, firefighters, oil and gas companies, construction contractors, contract logging operators and outdoor outfitters and guide services.
“Preparedness is our preference but response is our specialty,” explained Jeff Huhtanen, vice president and director of voice operations at Orbit One, which Huhtanen co-owns with OOC president and CEO David Ronsen. Ronsen also owns and manages Bridger Fire Inc. www.bridgerfire.com, a wildland firefighting company based in Bozeman, Montana.
The day Katrina made landfall, a team of 12 people from Bridger Fire Inc. were on the ground in Tallahassee, Florida, preparing to head for Franklinton, Louisiana, about 30 miles north of New Orleans, in order to help set up logistics facilities for relief equipment that has begun pouring into the area. A second crew of Bridger employees has since joined their colleagues to help install and monitor thousands of satellite tracking units that are being used to track and dispatch portable electrical power generators, water trucks, ice shipments, medical response equipment, emergency housing materials and emergency food supplies. OOC has also supplied hundreds of handheld satellite telephones to emergency responders involved in Katrina relief efforts, including the Red Cross, the US Navy and emergency service companies contracted to The Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
