SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 14 – Thales, global provider of Magellan(R) consumer GPS products, announced today the fall introduction of Magellan MapSend(R) Topo Canada, a powerful digital topographic map of Canada for selected GPS handhelds.
This new GPS map solution is perfect for hiking, fishing, hunting, biking and off-road adventures throughout Canada, because it delivers a seamless nationwide map showing topographic contours, extensive street detail, waterways and parks. It also provides a searchable points of interest database, plus waypoint and route management tools to simplify travel planning and navigation.
MapSend Topo Canada uses current data from DMTI Spatial, Inc., the leading provider of Canadian map data. When used on a personal computer, the user can search, pan, and zoom the nationwide map, plan a backcountry route, analyze elevation changes and custom-define a map area they want to store on their GPS receiver. Once defined, the customized map area, routes, and waypoints are easy to upload to the user’s compatible Magellan GPS receiver. The detailed uploadable map is so highly compressed that a user could load a map stretching from Calgary to Kamloops, and far enough North to include all of Banff and Jasper on a 64 MB SD card.
In the field, MapSend Topo Canada really comes alive. Start a hike, and the moving Topo map helps you stay on course and navigate around steep slopes or impassable swamp areas. It also records a track of where you walked. Along the way, the map shows land characteristics you might never be aware of without it, including ponds, streams and level spots perfect for pitching a tent.
MapSend Topo Canada users can even find a shop to buy supplies en route by using the searchable points of interest (POI) database. It includes thousands of restaurants, gas stations, lodging facilities, hospitals and more. Search POIs by name or find the nearest in a specific category, such as drug stores. Many POIs also provide an address and phone number for added convenience. Once a POI is identified, MapSend Topo Canada’s detailed street maps will help the user find the way there.
MapSend Topo Canada is compatible with Meridian(R) Color, Platinum, Gold, and Meridian Marine GPS handhelds as well as the Magellan SporTrak(R) Color, SporTrak Pro, SporTrak Pro Marine and SporTrak Map. Other MapSend solutions include the all-new MapSend Lakes USA (available September 2004, see related press release), MapSend Topo for the United States, MapSend DirectRoute(TM) North America and Magellan MapSend BlueNav(TM), as well as international titles.
