Aerial photography company BlueSky and European Space Imaging have announced that they have signed an agreement allowing BlueSky to become a reseller for ‘Ikonos’ satellite imagery in the UK. Ikonos is an agile controllable satellite and has the industry’s best revisit time allowing it to photograph any location on earth every three days.
BlueSky customers will be able to benefit from ‘change detection’ analysis such as agricultural subsidy control, monitoring of illicit construction or defining the extent of natural disasters such as floods or forest fires.
Ikonos is the world’s first commercial high-resolution imaging satellite and was launched into a sun-synchronous orbit in 1999. Travelling at an altitude of 423 miles, Ikonos orbits the earth every 98 minutes collecting black-and-white and colour data at a rate of over 2,000 square kilometres per minute enabling large areas to be captured successfully in a matter of days and weeks. Ikonos is controlled on an order basis, enabling image acquisition to be planned for the best weather conditions using the latest weather updates and optimised for camera attitude and sun-angle prior to the event.
“With our local receiving station in Germany, European Space Imaging can program the satellite some 10 minutes before the actual image acquisitions over any place in Europe and beyond, allowing us to avoid cloud coverage on the imagery. The satellite images are received and processed immediately and can be delivered the same day. This rapid response is also true for archived global data,” said Rob Postma, Sales Manager of European Space Imaging.
“Ikonos imagery will compliment BlueSky’s existing UK aerial photographic datasets and provide our customers with high quality imagery on demand where data currency is paramount. Like our traditional aerial photography Ikonos imagery is captured in stereo, in this case where two images of the same location on the Earth are taken from two different perspectives during one orbital pass. This enables us to process the data and produce high quality map accurate imagery that is bang up to date,” said James Eddy, BlueSky’s technical director.
BlueSky’s high quality digital aerial photography derives from the ‘Millennium Map’, Getmapping’s seamless vertical image of the UK. Super high-resolution photography is also available for 28 of the UK’s major towns and cities. BlueSky also provide many services associated with aerial photography production including other remote sensing such as LIDAR and oblique aerial photography, photographic laboratory services, scanning, photogrammetry, GPS ground control collection, plus format and media conversion.
