Microsoft’s First GPS Device Combines Best-Selling GPS Technology from SiRF With New-Generation Mapping and Trip-Planning Software
SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 31 – SiRF Technology Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:SIRF) , a leading provider of GPS-enabled silicon and software location platforms, today announced that its top-selling global positioning system (GPS) technology provides the underlying location capability for Microsoft’s first-ever GPS hardware device. The GPS Locator is combined with the latest version of Microsoft Streets & Trips 2005, the popular travel and mapping software for the United States and Canada. SiRF’s SiRFstarIIe/LP GPS chipset provides accurate and reliable information on location, speed and heading, making it easier than ever for consumers to hit the road with real-time GPS support.
“Microsoft’s decision to include a GPS receiver with its software is evidence that demand for GPS functionality is in the mainstream,” according to Kanwar Chadha, founder and vice president of marketing for SiRF Technology. “By combining leading technologies in a reasonably-priced package, a market leader like Microsoft can bring the benefits of location to a much wider consumer base.”
“GPS-based location is adding a new dimension to many of our customers’ lives. SiRF’s market-leading GPS technology allows drivers to extend Streets & Trips 2005 from a route-planning tool into a real-time driving assistant,” according to Danielle Damasius, product manager at Microsoft. “SiRF’s GPS technology makes many of the features possible because it delivers accurate location, allowing drivers to see exactly where they are at all times.”
As the industry standard for GPS performance, SiRFstarIIe/LP is optimized for devices such as the GPS receiver included in Microsoft’s Streets & Trips 2005 with GPS Locator. SiRF’s sophisticated positioning engine provides outstanding tracking capabilities even in tough environments such as urban canyons and under foliage canopies. With an embedded ARM7TDMI microprocessor, the SiRFstarIIe/LP frequently eliminates the need for a separate processor to run non-GPS tasks. This feature dramatically reduces costs and facilitates development of GPS-enabled consumer products such as Streets and Trips 2005 with GPS Locator. As a highly integrated and self-contained chip set, the SiRFstarIIe/LP is also well suited for use in stand-alone GPS modules and subsystems. The chip set includes SiRF’s adaptive TricklePower(TM) advanced power management technology, which reduces power consumption without compromising performance
Microsoft Streets & Trips helps travelers plan any local or long-distance trip with confidence. Customizable, comprehensive and current maps, driving directions, advanced routing options, road construction updates, and points of interest work seamlessly to reduce travel-related stress and save valuable time and money by allowing consumers to plan their trips in advance. Streets & Trips 2005 with GPS Locator includes a GPS receiver and enhanced GPS support, helping customers know exactly where they are and where they are headed while on the road.
