BALTIMORE (March 14, 2017) — Dr. Qassim Abdullah was doubly honored today by the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) at the organization’s annual Imaging and Geospatial Information Society (IGIS) conference in Baltimore.
The senior geospatial scientist and associate at Woolpert was elected as an ASPRS Fellow, which the organization defines as contributing exceptional service in advancing the science and use of the mapping sciences.
In his recognition letter, ASPRS Acting Executive Director Jesse Winch said that Abdullah had worked diligently and unselfishly for the science of the profession.
“I am very pleased that your efforts and contributions are being recognized,” Winch wrote.
Also at today’s conference, Abdullah was named the recipient of the 2017 Outstanding Service Award from ASPRS. The honor recognized his column called “Mapping Matters,” which is published monthly in the organization’s Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing (PE&RS) Journal for “at least the last 10 years.”
In addition to his ongoing work in the fields of photogrammetry and remote sensing for Woolpert and his multiple professional organizations, Abdullah also serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland and Penn State University. He teaches classes in multiple geospatial disciplines, including the applications of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), GIS data tasking and acquisition, and enterprise GIS.
Abdullah also helped write the most recent Positional Accuracy Standards for Digital Geospatial Data for the ASPRS, released in 2015 and used worldwide.
Previous accomplishments have included streamlining photogrammetric mapping processes and leading the technological charge in the transfer and process integration of a panoramic mapping system; contributing significantly to the advancement of digital aerial imagery and lidar (light detection and ranging) acquisition and production processes; developing software applications for digital orthophotography; and refining inertial navigation systems and GPS technology for position and orientation measurement.
These most recent ASPRS honors come on the heels of his appointment to the Transportation Research Board’s Standing Committee on Geospatial Data Acquisition Technology earlier this month, and his bestowing of a United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) certification as a Certified GEOINT Professional in Remote Sensing and Imagery Analysis in late 2016.
