Feature – Instagram on iOS and Android gets huge update with Instagram 3.0 Map Functionality

I know a few of you out there (like me) are Instagram nuts, errr users. Well, good news if you happen to be a geoGeek this week and a lover of Instagram as the service has [finally] announced photo maps – a natural UI for viewing your photos.

Available for iOS and Android, Photo Maps from Instagram 3.0  is a new way to browse photos on Instagram. Your Photo Map appears on your profile and lets you showcase your photos on a map. Also, you’ll be able to see other users’ maps from their profiles.

You’ll need to run to the iTunes store or Google play and get an update to your app, unless you have auto updates enabled on your device. Then, when you fire up Instagram you’ll likely notice some updates from friends who have already added photos to their map. A message will also be presented to your inviting you to add photos to your map – that is if you have any media within your collection that has geotagging included.  Recall, when you snap a photo on your mobile and share with instagram you typically have the option to include Geotagging with your photo – not suggested when you share from your home. Please note that for most devices you may be required to enable geotagging or enable GPS in order to accurately position your photo correctly – some devices will perform this based on WiFi or carrier positioning as well.

To create your photo map Instagram has made it fast, simple, and quite efficient. you’ll be presented with a list of your geotagged photos and asked if you’d like to add them to your map. I elected to optionally not add photos taken at/near my home as a safeguard and I suggest you do the same.

Great stuff from Instagram… a no-brainer in my mind and  a fabulous, natural addition to the popular service!

Once you agree, photos are presented on the map

Optionally add new photos to your map
