HTML5 and it’s related developments provide a lot of new possibilities also for the development of WebGIS applications. Without installing any software it is now possible to provide tools, that process user data from their local hard drive in a browser without any plugin. A recently developed tool by GIScience Research Group at the University of Heidelberg provides a WebGL based Point Cloud Viewer and uses the new FileReader-Object from the File API to directly access and visualize user data without the previous necessity of uploading it to the application server.
